I'm old school. One in each ear. Wouldn't be caught without something in my ears :)
Conservative hoops and studs with 1/4kt rubies, or 1/8 kt sapphires, or 1/4kt diamonds, and occasionally 5mm pearls. Like my mother. I find myself more and more like her in matters of dress than I ever thought I would be! I wonder what that would tell the psycholigists <<giggles>>, not that I care.

One in each ear. Small studs or pearls. Had pierced ears since 1977. I grew up in Fleetwood and it wasn't unusual to see fishermen with earrings.
My Grandmother pierced ears with an ice cube darning needle cork and a book since she was a girl. I got mine done at a jewellers in Blackpool soon after my 20th birthday

This is something I'm looking forward to. I'm just not ready yet, but definitely am looking into different options.

I just got mine done in November. Unfortunately the skin of my right ear grew over the flat back they put in. So I had to get the ER doctor to remove it (unfortunately he had no idea what he was doing so, like those blister packs for medicine, he popped my earring out like he was popping a pill out of one of those blister packs. So I had to wait a month before getting my ear re-pierced.
Unfortunately my ear started to do the same thing again, but this time I was able to push my earring through the back, and I was able to remove the flat back stud the piercer put in, back in February. Since then I've been wearing studs with bullet backs to bed, and most days some nice hoops, either the middle size ones or the large ones (I bought a 10-karat three pack with the three sizes—-the smallest I find just look too masculine on me, but the medium and large look very feminine on me—-I don't know why). I haven't had any stretching or tearing, although where I work I sometimes have to go into a freezer (-18C) and after a while I can feel the metal starting to freeze my earlobe.

Ha-ha! Me too. She was never without something in her ears: usually simple studs. Even if I am out digging in the garden, I always have a pair of silver ball studs. Of course, I fancy it up a bit if I am going out in the evening.
To answer the OP's questions, I have one piercing in each ear. I got them done quite early: after coming out to my wife, but before coming out to the world.

I have one in each ear. I did try a nose piercing but it started to pull through so I had to get rid of it.

I started with a single piercing in my left lobe. Had that for about 6-7 years before I finally had a job that I could have pierced ears and not cause a stink. So I currently have 3 in the left ear lobe and an industrial in my cartilage, two in my right lobe with two stacked rings in the cartilage. I also have my tongue pierced. The tongue was on a whim since I knew it would heal fast (about 2 weeks) and close over pretty easily if I ever decided I didn't like it but I've really grown to love having it. I do plan to get a nostril piercing and naval piercing eventually just haven't done so yet. I almost always have something in every place, usually a simple stud or hoop but will switch out for a nice pair of dangly earrings in the main lobe piercings on occasion.
Annaliese - for what it's worth I'd go to an actual piercer if you decide to get them done. It's not much more cost but they are cleaner, more precise, give MUCH better care instructions and mine even gave me his business cell in case there was ever any problems healing (there weren't). So much better experience than my first piercing at Claire's. <shudder>

One in each ear, and I had them pierced just before my 68th birthday. I always wear something, often simple silver hoops. But, I love the feel of longer, bigger earrings. Threaders are fun but my favorites are flame colored brass feathers. I agree that going to a shop where they use sterilized single use needles is the best option.

Used to be one in each for many years but eventually I got rid of them as they gave me issues. I prefer clip-ons anyway when dressed, they look much better as well.

Concur.
Not so much on the clip-ons. They hurt after a short while and are generally heavier.

Good topic....I am looking forward to it.
I have been using the clips for some time and they wok and look fine, but I am looking for the chance to pierce my ears.
Although I might start with one on each ear, I would love to have 2 or 3 on each.
