A jury has found a 21-year-old transgender woman guilty of three counts of sexual assault for lying to a man about her gender identity before getting physically intimate with him.
While 21-year-old Ciara Watkin's lawyer said that her gender identity should've been "blindingly obvious" to her same-age sexual partner, her partner said he wouldn't have met her in person if he had known about her trans identity beforehand.
A jury in the northeast-central coastal town of Middlesbrough, England, found Watkin guilty after a two-day trial, BBC reported. During the trial, her lawyer noted that Watkin has gone by the name Clara since age 13 but hasn't undergone any gender-affirming medical treatments or surgeries.
... When they met in person, she told him she was on her period so that he wouldn't touch her below the waist. They then went on to have sexual contact.
Watkin's sexual partner contacted police after she revealed her gender identity to him later via text message. He told police, "I wouldn't have met her because I don't swing that way." When questioned by police, Watkin said she didn't reveal her gender identity beforehand because it has been difficult for her to find relationships.

I bet he had no complaints while that was going on. He had no complaints until after. He didn't complain about what he did, only who he did it with.

Ouch... this is exactly why it's so important to remain silent when questioned by police. A statement like that can easily be framed as deception.
And yes, it reflects a double standard.
Cisgender people withhold or bend the truth about all sorts of things in relationships, yet it's only when trans people are involved that it suddenly becomes criminalized.
Thankfully, I don't have to carry that particular burden in my own life, I wear my trans flag on my skin everywhere I go.
