United States Air Force (USAF) Birthday - 78 Today -September 18, 2025

The United States Air Force (USAF) celebrates its beginning on September 18, 1947,
when President Truman signed the National Security Act, establishing the USAF as a
separate and equal branch of the military. This act formalized the air arm, which
had been part of the U.S. Army, into the independent U.S. Air Force

Supreme Court Chief Justice Fred Vinson swore in Stuart Symington as the first-ever
Secretary of the Air Force 78 years ago today—and with that the U.S. Air Force became
became the first new U.S. military service since the Revolutionary War.

On social media, Pentagon and Congressional leaders, the Air & Space Forces Association,
and many others celebrated the Air Force birthday with special messages.

Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David A. Flosi declared: "78 years of air dominance.
78 years of unmatched Airmen. We are the world's greatest flying force. Happy birthday, Air Force!"

At air shows across the country, the Air Force has celebrated its history with "heritage flights,"
with modern fighters like the F-35 Lightning II and F-22 Raptor soaring alongside World War II-era
aircraft like the P-51 Mustang.

On this day in 1975, I was sworn in to active duty in the U.S. Army. I had applied to join the Air Force, but was told I couldn't fly because I was colorblind. (I'm not). Then the Army offered to give me a tank. Almost as cool as an F-35, so I agreed. 😁

Happy Birthday, U.S. Air Force!
