For the fourth year in a row, Florida Republican lawmakers are attempting to ban Pride flags from state facilities.
Sponsored by Senator Clay Yarborough (R-Jacksonville) and State Representative David Borrero (R-Hialeah), the identical House Bill 347 and Senate Bill 426 would bar state and local government buildings and public schools from displaying flags "which represent political partisanship, political ideology, race, gender, or sexual orientation."
Under those guidelines, public government facilities wouldn't be permitted to fly Pride flags, as well as Black Lives Matter flags. At the same time, the bill would allow "a flag of historical significance to the government of the United States or this state," clearing the way for government buildings to display Confederate signage.
The bill arrives amid a concerted rejection of the Pride emblem. In June, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law ordering that the state remove "non-standard surface markings, signage, and signals that do not directly contribute to traffic safety or control," paving the way for rainbow crosswalk removals. This has led to a struggle between government agencies and protestors who wish for the crosswalks to remain.
Texas has undergone a similar fight after Greg Abbott ordered that all rainbow crosswalks in the state be removed. In protest, a Dallas Methodist church painted the steps outside its doors in the colors of the LGBTQ+ Pride flag last month. On the national level, FBI Director Kash Patel fired an agent in training for displaying a gay Pride flag on his desk last year, according to reports.
