I got a new human hair wig for Christmas. It's literally the perfect colour that I've always wanted.

It's amazing how hair can totally transform your looks. And from there it transforms your mood.

So so happy with it.

I'm resuscitating this topic. Not because I have a new wig, because I want one. I'm hoping someone can help me. Here are my hopes and limitations 
- My natural brown curls have thinned and don't feel or look great for a woman
- Money is tight. $150? I can make it happen. $600? No way.  Years away from affording that. 
- the wigs I'm finding feature big hair. This isn't the 80s and I was in college then. 
- wigs that are thin and natural looking are often short. My face is best when framed with waves down to my shoulders. 
- My current with is a Paula Young Heart of Gold Whisperlite. I'm looking into getting it thinned.

I have found that the full-coverage wigs tend to be the big hairstyles. That gets too hot in the summer!

I switched to toppers because they cover the top, but are available in lengths like 21 inches. The crown is an open weft, so they breathe. The hair is not as thick because they are designed to fit over your natural hair and blend with it. (See my profile pic).

They have a variety of colors and styles. Most of mine are Raquel Welch brand, which can be pricey. The other downside is matching the color to your natural color. For me, it was easier to dye my hair to match the topper. That way, I got the color and style I wanted.

Of course, price is a consideration. If you go too cheap, the wig will look cheap. However, going expensive does not give better results. Some expensive wigs are overpriced without a huge jump in quality.

My suggestion is to visit a wig store. Nobody there will question why you want a wig. It could be a costume party, Halloween, CDing, or daily wear. They don't care. They will measure you for the right size. You can get good feedback about colors and styles that fit you. If you don't like something, tell them so they can adjust. Wig stores have a lot of brands, colors, and styles in stock, and they can help you decide and, more importantly, help you learn about what will work and what doesn't. You can always then take that information and shop online for deals after that.

Over the the years I have bought from four or five wig stores.  My first wig visit was a private hairstylist who also had wigs for sale.  That was helpful.  The worst part of that was there were about five boys playing in the backyard and when they looked into her stylist studio they laughed at me.  I did not care for that.  I did get some good advice and a nice wig.

After that I visited wig stores, some in beauty supply stores, and also got some advice and these places had wider wig selections.  I learned there were color/shade codes for wigs that were widely used in the wig industry.  I wonder if they were the same as hair dye color codes.

All my wigs except a few of the early ones were long hair styles.  I prefer to wear my natural hair.
The texture of hair, which impacts its look and feel, varies with nationality too.

Have fun trying out wigs.  Typically you get what you pay for.  I would avoid the more expensive ones until you are comfortable with wigs.
