Alex Bollinger (4 March 2026)

Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D) is projected to win the primary contest to represent the Lone Star State in the U.S. Senate. Talarico has gotten 52.9% of the vote with 90.9% of precincts reporting, according to NBC News. The second-place candidate, LGBTQ+ ally and U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), got 45.7% of the vote.

And Republicans have wasted no time in reminding voters that Talarico doesn't hate transgender people.

"Meet James Talarico, Texas' Democrat nominee for U.S. Senate," the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) posted to X late last night. "He thinks 'God is nonbinary.'"

The post included a 10-second clip from a 2021 speech Talarico gave in response to an anti-trans sports ban that the Texas legislature had passed. Talarico, who is Christian, was responding to the fact that most supporters of that bill based their support on their Christianity.

"The worst part, for me, was the number of Christians who used Scripture to justify hurting children," he said at the time. "So let's talk about that. The first two lines of the Bible, the first two lines in Genesis, use two different Hebrew words to describe God. One is the masculine Hebrew noun for divinity; the second is the feminine Hebrew noun for spirit."

"God is both masculine and feminine and everything in between. God is nonbinary."

"Trans children are God's children made in God's own image. There is nothing wrong with them, nothing at all."

"Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?"

The answer never was in the Bible.

I liked Crockett.  I have NO problem with Talarico.  He may be a bit better positioned to win the general election.  No wonder the Republicans don't like him.  He has also very effectively called out their religious hypocrisy.
