Title: Costs and time off working for various gender conforming surgeries
Post by: ChrissyRyan on March 08, 2026, 06:01:40 PM
I am interested in what each of the various gender comforming surgeries now typically cost for MTFs.  If you have had any with the past few years or so, or have pricing for upcoming surgeries, please share what you feel comfortable, including the approximate dates of these procedures to judge perhaps how prices may have changed since a procedure was done.

I realize there may be extra costs, such as travel, lodging, before and after surgery consultations and care, and things such as before procedure electrolysis costs. Please let us know what those may be.  Also, importantly, please share how much time off working is needed for each procedure.

If there is a preferred sequence for these procedures, please share that.

Also please when you mention costs, say how much your insurance plan or employer or government plan pays, and what would be your out of pocket costs.

Plus any other relevant information, such as what you wished you have done if you could do it over, wait time to get the procedure done, and why and what surgery was the most helpful, effective, and gave you the most value for the money spent.

I am thinking of facial, breast, GCS, and voice related procedures not just GCS down there.

Thank you.

Government insurance covered 100% of costs for my bottom surgery, including travel to and from Montreal.  I didn't get top surgery.  If I had wanted it, they would only have covered it if I hadn't reached Tanner stage 3 after two years of HRT.  But I was at Tanner 3, and I didn't want a BA anyway, so it was a moot point.

I didn't do electrolysis for my surgery.  Dr. Brassard doesn't require it.  I just had to shave the area the day before.  I had a trachea shave at the same time as the GRS, and had to pay $5000 out of pocket for that.  It is an elective procedure, so that was the whole cost.   Electrolysis wouldn't have been covered if I had wanted it.

If I recall (it was 2020), I think they recommended three weeks off work.  I know there are some people who only took one week off.   It was a non-issue for me, being retired.

I am quite satisfied with the results.  I probably didn't need the trachea shave.  If doing it all over, I don't think I would get that.  I didn't need a boob job, and I am happy that I didn't get any vocal surgery.  I have heard some scary post-surgery voices, and I think I am better off with my natural voice and some coaching.

Good luck!

Are all of these surgeries available in the USA for adults?

Do you have to have all your personal identification updated to note "Female" if you are MTF to get these surgeries in the USA?  If so, it may be a while before these documentation markers can be corrected.
