SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - On Thursday, the South Dakota Supreme Court ruled that transgender people cannot change the gender on their birth certificate that reflects their personal gender identity.
The case stems from September 2024, when Sigrid Nielsen, a transgender woman, filed a petition in court to amend her birth certificate on her sex designation from male to female.
The court denied the petition, and Nielsen appealed.
The South Dakota Supreme Court ruled that a person can only change the sex on their birth certificate unless it was made in error at the time of birth.
