Dijon or wholegrain in sandwiches, English mustard I have used in cooking. I never thought of it with black pudding. Do you mean like in a bacon and black pudding butty or full english? It's usually so strong it stings my nose! Lovely taste though.
I use dijon in things like peppercorn sauce too.
US yellow mustard on hotdogs and burgers.

Dijon on every mustard is appropriate on. Yellow mustard is good when Dijon is not available.
Oh, except soft pretzels, then it's yellow mustard.

Whole kernel mustard. In the lounge. With the lead pipe.
Gulden's Spicy Brown is my favourite, hard to find overseas though. Colman's is indeed hot, about equal to the mustard in Chinese restaurants in the US.

Mustard seems like it is hard to go bad. Maybe I just eat it before it goes bad. The same for honey.
There are many thoughts on if mustard, after opening, should be stored on the shelf or in the refrigerator. The Internet has many comments on this.
Mustard seeds are very small.

I do not use mustard at Chinese restaurants although I am sure it is in some of their recipes.
Sometime I use a chili oil / paprika sauce there, but only for potstickers.

I normally use honey mustard. I cook a lot of cottage rolls which uses honey mustard for a sauce. Otherwise I only use mustard for pretzels or sausages (not hotdogs). I sometimes like to use Keens extra hot yellow mustard.
Mostly I avoid mustard as I dislike the taste of vinegar.

This is my go to.
I have tried the milder European stuff. I don't rate Dijon or whatever else. If it doesn't make your eyes water, it isn't mustard.
What Americans call mustard, the stuff you put on hotdogs and whatever, in the UK we call it burger sauce. It's extremely mild.

Have any of you tried Ingelhoffer's or Sweet Baby Ray's honey mustard?

Haha, yeah it's kind of like napalm in a jar. I find that mixing it with mayonnaise is quite nice for things like burgers or hot dogs. You really don't want to use a lot of it. One of my brothers dared one of his friends to eat a tablespoon of it once, when we were kids. I sincerely thought we might have to call an ambulance. He went a very odd shade and started twitching uncontrollably.
It is quite excellent on a hot roast beef sandwich, though.

I got some Colman's mustard. It comes in a very small jar, like the size of an aspirin bottle, 100 grams. Tiny. Expensive per ounce.
I have not tasted it. I will try it eventually on some food.
At least I was able to get it cheaper than the current online price, a small victory.

It works wonders on a hot roast beef sandwich. Ham is also nice. I like it on pork pie, but I am guessing you don't get those over there.
The jars are small because a little really does go a long way. You only really want a tiny amount. I did see a video where an American guy did the hot dog squiggle Dev spoke of. He thought it would be akin to American mustard. He couldn't speak for 10 minutes and went through a whole box of Kleenex.

I will use just a dab when I do use it. Looks like it costs less than two pounds for 100 grams there in England. More than four dollars here, some places over six dollars.

Yeah... it's way cheaper here. The export thing is meh. It's eminently reasonable in the UK.
Kind of like Hendo's. It's a kind of relish only sold in my hometown of Sheffield. It's like Worcestershire sauce but so much better. You can't get it outside of Sheffield, even in the UK. Outside of Amazon, where the price is exorbitant.

I gave some to one of my friends down in Kent and she was literally like "No wonder people in the south are so miserable."
I am curious, what kinds of things you folks have that we would struggle to get.

Americans love Peanut Butter and that can be difficult to find outside of North America....
Of course in Australia the UK you have your beloved Vegimite and Marmite.
I have yet to acquire a taste for them.

Haha, yeah, Marmite is a very divisive thing. I fall firmly in the camp of "love". It's very savoury. If anyone in the UK ever ate something called "Twiglets"... or even pretzels, that's similar to what they're coated in.
I have never tried Vegemite, though.. Maybe @Sarah B could enlighten us?
I have never been massive on peanut butter, honestly. Mostly because the stuff I've tried has all tasted like it's mixed with sugar. Peanuts aren't supposed to be sweet. I like peanuts as a general rule... but the stuff in jars all tastes like it went to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. It's hard to find a good jar of unsweetened peanut butter in the UK.

I would rather use a strawberry preserve or strawberry spread (for less sugar than what must be used for a preserve.)
A "yeast spread" does not sound at first blush to be appealing.

@Sephirah @Northern Star Girl
Comparisons
| Product | Country | Origin | Sweetness | Strength | Key ingredients |
| Bovril | United Kingdom | Beef extract spread/drink | Not sweet | Very strong, savoury | Beef extract, salt |
| Promite | Australia | Yeast extract spread | Slightly sweet | Medium strength | Yeast extract, sugar |
| Marmite | United Kingdom | Yeast extract spread | Not sweet | Strong, salty | Yeast extract, salt |
| Vegemite | Australia | Yeast extract spread | Not sweet | Very strong, bitter | Yeast extract, salt |
Some thoughts on these speads
The Americans do not know what they are missing out on and when they try them as far as I know they hate them, why? They slather it on so thick they puke. For us Aussies and maybe the British we start out very early on life with just a very tiny thin amount and eventually we have layered it on thick, so to speak. Me? I have put it on so thick and ate it and then watched others try to copy me and seeing there faces is priceless! Promite is sweeter and Vegemite is stronger I don't mind which one I have.

By the sounds of that, I would probably like Vegemite. :)
Never heard of Promite, though. It sounds like a type of concrete.
Bovril is... haha, it's a very UK thing. It's like... a watered down gravy that people drink, like tea. I never got the taste. Oxo, on the other hand, I have ate those cubes when I was a kid. But then I was a very weird kid.

I tried the Colman's brand mustard on a ham and cheese sandwich I brought from home for lunch.
I did not liberally spread it from the jar. I only put on a little because of the warning that this mustard would be hot. I tasted a dab by itself and noticed that it is spicy, in a way like horseradish.
My conclusion from this sandwich is that I did not put on enough mustard to appreciate the enhancement that mustard should provide to a ham and cheese sandwich. So not only was this Colman's mustard not particularly spicy hot, there was not enough mustard on the sandwich to appreciate mustard being on the sandwich.
On my next sandwich, I will double the amount of Colman's mustard used. For now, French's yellow mustard, used the way I usually use it, would have been a far better choice.
However, I am fair and will give this at least one more try on a ham and cheese sandwich, and perhaps something else. At worst, I will be using this mustard up to not waste it.

I'd try the Coleman's when making BBQ sauce. It would probably give it a nice zing.

Quote from: ChrissyRyan on April 01, 2026, 12:13:18 PMI tried the Colman's brand mustard on a ham and cheese sandwich I brought from home for lunch.
I did not liberally spread it from the jar. I only put on a little because of the warning that this mustard would be hot. I tasted a dab by itself and noticed that it is spicy, in a way like horseradish.

I do not like Branston Pickle, but the guy made a perfect storm of annihilation, haha. To be fair, though, that's kind of what I do. I like the occasional cheeseburger smothered with mustard. I think because I hate ketchup. Never, ever use it. A good Aberdeen Angus or wagyu quarter pounder with some pink Cheshire cheese, smothered with Colmans mustard is... well... if you ever want the way to my heart... that's probably it.
Which is kind of weird because I am not someone who likes spicy food as a rule. I throw in the towel at Jalapenos. But I can sink mustard with reckless abandon.

Thing with mustard though is it's a totally different type of spice to chilli's. I wonder if you would like Wasabi then?

I do yes. I like sushi with lashings of wasabi on the side. You're right, it is a different kind of thing and I can't put my finger on exactly why. I think maybe because the impact is short lived where capsaicin kind of punishes you for ages. It blows your head off for a minute then it's gone. Eat something with capsaicin in it and you could have panting contests with local dogs for a good few hours, haha.

I do like a bit of chilli heat but I'm no masochist. I'm not a vindaloo girl. I love Japanese food too. Particuarly Tepanyaki and Yakitori but sushi is nice too. Don't get to have it much though. I do like wasabi in moderation.

I have had a hamburger with Colman's mustard but the mustard did not taste hot.
My next attempt with this mustard is to use more of it, then finally using as much as I would use plain common yellow mustard.
So far, it is just a very expensive but also a decent tasting mustard.

Nor do they have nuggets, yet people eat them. There was a commercial when I was a younger person. That had these scientists types looking for the nuggets and no one could find them. And that's why you should eat this restaurants chicken strips.

The British traditionally eat a fair amount of offal (liver and bacon, steak and kidney pudding, pork ->-bleeped-<-gots, tripe etc) but I have never been a fan. I wish I was as it's cheap eating over here!
I do love black pudding though and that is something that you guys don't quite get. Very versatile and very tasty.

Calf fries are the difference between a bull and a steer.
Those parts were saved cooked and eaten.

I made a hamburger and put my usual amount of mustard on it. I used the Colman's mustard.
The sandwich was good, the mustard was good, but it was not a hot mustard. A hint of horseradish perhaps, but not mouth burning.

I was very surprised that my teaspoons were too large to fit into a Colman's mustard jar (100 gram size). However I would most times use a knife I suppose for mustard jars.

With you there. I think that's even a north/south gap in the UK, though. Show someone from London black pudding... or worse, tell them its origins, and they will look at you like you just took a butcher's knife to their firstborn... before offering you some eels, and mashed potato, in something that looks like it is a special effect in an adult movie.
