House Republicans advanced a bill on Tuesday that critics are denouncing as a "book ban bill" and a "don't say trans" bill, but Republicans say it is necessary to prevent schools from hiring strippers to perform for children.
H.R. 7661, or the "Stop the Sexualization of Children Act," would amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to ban the use of federal funds for "any program or activity" that includes "sexually oriented material."
"Sexually oriented material" is defined in the bill as "any program, activity, literature, or material that exposes such children to nude adults, individuals who are stripping, or lewd or lascivious dancing," but the bill also says that "any material that... involves gender dysphoria or (transgender ideology)" is included in its definition of "sexually oriented material."
Book Riot reports that Republicans in the House Committee on Education & Workforce voted down several amendments offered by Democrats that would have protected materials used in "teaching global religions, culturally diverse history, sexual assault, and child trafficking." The committee then voted to send the bill to the House floor with a recommendation to pass it, also along party lines.
The bill has also been denounced by the American Library Association, which said that it's not "about protecting kids. It's about giving politicians broad authority to restrict whose stories are allowed on our shelves. That should concern anyone who believes in the freedom to read and the right of families to make decisions for themselves."

Good news has been quite infrequent in the US lately. I really do wish I had something better to report. However, it is important to keep up with everything so we can make plans to fight back, or flee.
I'll try to find a waterskiing cat...
