March 20 (UPI) -- A Vermont fire department came to the rescue of a raccoon that got its head stuck in a peanut butter jar before fleeing to a high branch in a tree.

The Shelburne Fire Department said on social media that firefighters were tipped off to the raccoon's predicament by Shelburne Water Department personnel.

"Upon arrival, crews located the raccoon approximately 25 feet in a tree. It appeared to have had a little too much luck finding the peanut butter, but not quite enough luck removing the container afterward," the post said.

Firefighters used a ladder to reach the raccoon's position and were able to use a snare to pull the jar from its head, "restoring the raccoon's vision and, to some extent, its dignity."

The department said the incident should serve as a reminder to residents to properly dispose of trash.

In my neighborhood, residents properly dispose of raccoons.

Thought they were going to say a reminder to residents not to put their heads in peanut butter jars!

I know they are regarded as vermin over there but Raccoons are so cute! We don't have them over here except in zoos.

It's amazing the damage those cute little things can do to pets and livestock.  Yet people still leave pet food out for their cats and dogs.  I personally know of a couple near Tahoe that leave food out in their backyard for the bears.  WTF, some people's kids.

You can adapt raccoons here. They have to be constantly entertained, or they get destructive. My wife was looking into it. You do have to go through a licensed breeder.

That's wild.  I don't know for sure but I expect most states here have laws against owning raccoons.

I did a quick search, and somewhere between 13 and 20 states allow raccoons to be kept as pets. Some states don't even require permits (Arkansas, Rhode Island, Vermont).

Florida baby.
Florida man stories aren't as far from the truth as one might think.
The most common phrase before an ambulance or police are called us "hold my beer"

No way would I keep a wild animal as a pet.

As long as they have a secure area with stuff to keep them entertained, they are supposed to be great fun.

I would not want to try to domesticate an animal whose habitat is in the wild.

Some when they get bigger will not be as friendly.  They may eat your chickens and dogs and cats.

I have multiple friends that have a skunks as pets. Most had their skunks descented. One did not. His brother scared the skunk and we'll it took a long time to get the smell out of the house. It is a good lesson to remember

Tomato juice or soup will do it.

When we lived in the desert in California, our dog would come home smelling like a skunk. We would bathe her in tomato juice. I think it's the acid that gets rid of it.

Ugh.

That requires a flamethrower. I would just move and burn it to the ground.
