City of Boston (27 March 2026)

The Council adopted a resolution offered by Councilors Durkan, Santana, and Breadon, recognizing March 31, 2026, as Transgender Day of Visibility, affirming the right of all genderqueer, non-binary, and transgender people to live openly and express their gender freely without persecution.

The resolution highlights the ongoing challenges faced by transgender and non-binary individuals, including discrimination, barriers to fundamental civil rights, and acts of violence – particularly against transgender women of color. At the same time, it emphasizes that Transgender Day of Visibility is a celebration of the joy, strength, and resiliency of transgender and non-binary people around the world, many of whom face significant personal and professional risks simply for being their authentic selves.

First established by American trans activist Rachel Crandall Crocker, Transgender Day of Visibility is an international observance that calls on allies and advocates to uplift transgender lives and contributions while recognizing that visibility is not possible or safe for everyone in the community. The resolution acknowledges that support for transgender and non-binary communities is deeply rooted in grassroots activism.
