New Data Shows Vast Majority of Americans Support Trans Rights

As bills aiming to push transgender people out of public life pass through state legislatures nationwide, a new survey shows that most Americans — regardless of party, race or gender — believe that trans people deserve equal protection.
In a new survey of over 1,000 respondents, 85% of Americans believe that "transgender people should have the same rights and protection as everyone else." The sentiment was agreed upon by 92% of Democrats, 76% of Republicans and 87% of independents. The survey was conducted by research firm SSRS and funded by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
The survey also found that over four in 10 Americans now know a trans person, a rise from just one in three in previous surveys, while 27% of Americans say that they regularly have conversations with trans people. Previous research has shown that knowing a trans person corresponds with increased support for trans issues.
A large majority of Americans agreed that trans people should be able to access the health care they need (89%), be protected from employment discrimination (79%), and protected from discrimination and harassment in schools (83%). Notably, a majority of Republicans believed that trans people should be protected from discrimination in both arenas, as well.
With each question, support for protections for trans people was highest among people who spoke with trans people regularly, higher among those who knew a trans person, and lowest among those who did not know a trans person.

I don't doubt the survey's validity, but it suggests most of the remaining 15% live in Montana.
Or, more hopefully, people are finally fed up with the persecution and dehumanization.
Or, most likely, as people fall off the MAGA bandwagon, they come to their senses.

I think the difference is that people who don't know anyone who is trans have an image in their head of what a trans person is. That image is fueled by stereotypes and derogatory news stories.
Those who know a trans person and have had conversations with us realize that the stereotypes do not hold. They realize we are just regular people living our lives. We pay bills, work, go to school, fight fires and crime, and in many cases have the same opinions about politics that our cisgender friends have.
This is where just being ourselves fights the lies about us.

As always the media fuels the bogeyman and once you get to reality you realise that people are just people
Same for everything really - if we didn't have the media then we would all hold our scummy politicians to account rather than turn on each other and we would love in a decent country

I cannot claim to know how people vs politics vs behaviour really works, but I do have an opinion.
Fwiw, my tuppence is that why we often can see differences in poll numbers vs actual fallout is related to how we (all, in a sweeping sense) function when it comes to morality and actions.
Looking at two ancient Greek philosophers, for a bit of an explanation:
Plato reasoned that a rational mind would act in the best interest of being good.
Glaucon reasoned that we will often act in a way that makes us look good.
So, in polls we will see more of Platonic morale in that the answers more reflect peoples' will of being good, but when it comes down to reality the Glauconic morale will have a sizeable impact in how people actually behave.
