After seven years, sheriff's deputy Anna Lange and Houston County, Georgia, have reached a settlement in the case over the county's health insurance excluding gender-affirming services. The legal case and the county's push to exclude trans health care are estimated to have cost the county over $2 million in legal costs as it fought to avoid covering $10,000 to $20,000 in medical expenses for Lange.
While a joint statement was released, lawyers for both parties declined to comment further. However, in 2023, Lange summed up the case saying, "It was a slap in the face, really, to find out how much they had spent. They're treating it like a political issue, obviously, when it's a medical issue."
Under the terms of the settlement, the county will maintain its exclusion for gender-affirming surgeries, but will cover non-surgical gender-affirming healthcare. Additionally, Lange, who is still employed with the Sheriff's department, will still be covered for "any procedures contemplated at the time of and that arise out of Sgt. Lange's original surgery." Lange also received $5,000 in reimbursement for out-of-pocket health expenses.
According to the statement, the parties agreed to resolve the lawsuit to avoid the costs that would have come with further legal battles. In 2023, it was revealed that the county had already spent nearly $1.2 million in legal fees to private law firms on the case, enough to have covered nearly three years of the county's physical and mental health budget.
