The Gender Liberation Movement (GLM) is calling on New York City Pride to ban hospitals that have suspended gender-affirming care programs for trans youth. GLM's letter against the hospitals includes signatories from LGBTQ+ non-profits, the families of trans youth, and former NYC Pride grand marshals.
"We call on NYC Pride to prohibit any hospital system that has ended, restricted, or suspended gender-affirming care for transgender youth from marching in the 2026 NYC Pride March and festival, and any future prides, unless and until they restore that care and publicly commit to protecting trans youth and their families," GLM's letter reads. "While we understand that not everyone who marches with the hospitals supports these decisions, as institutions, they must be held accountable. New York Pride is uniquely positioned to help lead this endeavor."
While Pride parades are largely open to all, organizers have been known to prohibit certain groups in the past. NYC Pride itself has previously prohibited uniformed police contingents from participating in the parade, owing to the long-standing history of police brutality against the LGBTQ+ community, with the Stonewall Riots often cited as just a single example.
Similarly, politicians who have supported anti-LGBTQ+ causes have been barred from participating in the Pride parade before, providing a precedent for banning organizations from participating over their past actions.
