The Reuters journalists who wrote this article did a poor job explaining what actually happened.

The facts as alleged in this article state:

She was sentenced while legally a male in 2023 and was handed an 18-month prison ‌term for offences including incitement to hatred, insult, trespass, and defamation.

After Germany's Self-Determination Act came into effect on November 1, 2024, permitting individuals to amend gender identification documents, Liebich legally changed gender to female.

This required her transfer to Chemnitz women's prison under Saxony's prison rules.

Liebich failed to report to the women's facility in August 2025 and fled. Czech police apprehended her in 2026 in a town near the German border.

She told an extradition hearing in the Czech Republic in May (2026) that she was opposed to returning to Germany on concern about being placed in a men's prison.

If she was already in prison, serving her 18-month sentence, how did she escape to the Czech Republic?

If she was arrested and sentenced in 2023, how did no one notice she didn't show up at the women's prison until August 2025?

If she changed her German gender documents in Germany, under German law in 2024, did she do that from prison? Or while living in the Czech Republic? And the court didn't notice she was an escaped felon, or currently serving a sentence in a men's prison?

I don't understand.
