Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway (R) sent a legal threat to a local library for hosting a "Rainbow Story Time" event this past Saturday, suggesting that pornography would be shown at the event even though there was no reason to believe that it would be.
The Daniel Boone Regional Library in Columbia announced the event on its website, saying that it's "a queer-led story time with an LGBTQ+ theme." Activities planned for the event included "share stories, sing songs, and do an activity with time to meet new friends at the end."
The website said that it was for toddlers and preschoolers.
The announcement showed a picture of two men and a baby with a picture book. The announcement made no mention of drag performers appearing at the 30-minute event.
According to KMIZ, a library spokesperson said in an email that the event would involve a reading of the books Rainbowsaurus and Big Wig. Rainbowsaurus, by Steve Anthony, is about a colorful dinosaur, and its only reference to LGBTQ+ people is that the family in the pictures has two dads. Big Wig, by Jonathan Hillman, is about a kid who dresses in drag.
"Neither includes sexual content," the library spokesperson said.
"We've sent a notice to the library reminding them that providing pornography or sexual material to minors is against Missouri law," Hanaway posted to X.
The Attorney General's Office said the fact that the event is geared towards LGBTQ+ families is proof enough that it could violate the law.
