Lilly Wachowski revealed that while her new movie, The Hunted, is in late-stage production, it has stalled because Hollywood executives are declining to fund the $10 million project. Wachowski says that's because the story about trans people features an extensive trans cast.
"People like it," Wachowski said of The Hunted's script on The Business podcast, "but they really don't want to make it because it's [got a] wall-to-wall trans cast."
The Hunted, which Wachowski co-wrote with her creative and romantic partner Micky Ray Mahoney, is a dystopian political thriller set in a version of the United States where trans people have been pushed to the margins of society and are brutalized. When two trans women seek to solve a crime, they find themselves embroiled in a scheme that goes all the way to the top of the government.
While the topical film appears ready to go, the funding has been a sticking point for Wachowski. However, she is not deterred and notes that she will now have to "get creative and figure out different ways that I can get this in front of people."

I can't get Hollywood to fund a brand new car for me, but I didn't run crying to the news about it. 🤣

I kind of get it. Here's why:
The average viewer has been hit with a litany of anti-trans rhetoric. They would have to cope with their feelings about all of this if they were compelled to watch a movie that doesn't demonize or ridicule trans people. Well, that's not a lot of fun.
Sort of like seeing a movie or documentary about hard-working immigrants. "I was told that it's ok to drag those people off to immigrant prisons without a trial. Why are you showing me this side of the story? It's very inconvenient."
Hollywood financiers want to make money and stay out of controversy. It seems that a movie that portrays trans people sympathetically might not do so well.

Omg could never have imagined that!!
At best people don't really ever think about trans people. At worst we're hated.

Perhaps get the CIA to fund it.
It worked for Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, and others who made controversial films.
