Chloe Shapiro was promised an honorable discharge and $86,655.32 in severance if she agreed to voluntarily leave the Army National Guard and not fight Trump's second trans military ban. Months later, she has received only $20,000 of that payment and is now homeless.
"I had my plan completely perfected," The Washington Post reports that Shapiro told a Seattle nonprofit worker. "If I had that money, everything would have landed where it needed to be."
Shapiro served for over 12 years after enlisting at just 17. With no college education or training outside the military, the armed forces were expected to make up the majority of her career. She first worked as a combat engineer, then as a noncommissioned officer leading training programs.
Like many trans people, Shapiro came out as trans while President Joe Biden was in office and reversed Donald Trump's first-term trans military ban.
Shapiro tells The Washington Post that she had done the calculations and trusted that while she was being forced out of the life she had known, she would have the money to start a new life by going to college to get the credentials for a new career.
Like many ->-bleeped-<-es under the Trump administration, Shapiro fled Texas, which is one of the most hostile states towards trans people, and headed to Seattle. While she was able to stay with two trans women there for a short time, she ultimately ended up living in her car.
