Title: Title length restriction issue
Post by: Sarah B on September 07, 2026, 03:13:36 PM
Hi Everyone

I have been doing more news posting lately and I'm running into the restricted length of the title often.

The question is can the title length (characters) input be increased?

Your thoughts?

When I'm posting and the article title is too long I just pick a convenient point and chuck in an ellipsis. The full article title is always going to show up if someone reads the post.

Hi Devlyn

Yes, the ellipses, sounds or seems to be the best solution (one solution staring right in my face and not seeing the forest for the trees).  Instead of me truncating here and there.

This solution would be easier than to change the code to allow extra characters in the title.

Thank you for your suggestion.

On the Forum we have a baked-in 80 character subject title maximum length including spaces
on postings, topics and PMs.
You can abbreviate or truncate text or eliminate small one and two letter words.

As Devlyn pointed out if there are enough key words in the subject title to draw the
reader's interest then the entire subject title can be seen on the 1st line of the actual posting.

I would also add to be sure to check the edited version of the title. Jessica showed me that sometimes, where the title gets truncated can change the meaning of the topic, such as:

House passes elections overhaul bill that could make it harder for married women to vote

There are a few ways that editing this title could go very wrong.
