A school board in Virginia voted late last week to reverse a policy banning extracurricular clubs at the middle school level following a settlement in a lawsuit brought on behalf of students who wanted to start a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA).

On Friday, the King George County School Board unanimously approved changes to its student organizations policy, the Fredericksburg Free Press reports. The updated policy removes restrictions approved last November on non-curricular student organizations at all but the high school level.

The board's vote came a week after a federal judge halted proceedings in a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia against the King George County School Board on behalf of two King George Middle School students and their parents, accusing the board of illegally barring the formation of a GSA in violation of the students' rights under the First Amendment and the federal Equal Access Act.

"Having been advised that the parties have reached a settlement, any further discovery deadlines are stayed until further order of this Court," Senior U.S. District Judge Robert E. Payne wrote in a September 4 order, according to The Advocate.

While the board and superintendent Boyd did not mention the lawsuit or settlement on Friday, the vote on the policy change came after a closed session Friday morning during which board members were briefed on "actual or probable litigation," according to the Fredericksburg Free Press.

The updated policy now requires students to provide "proof of written parental permission to form and/or join" an extracurricular club. Student organizations must submit renewal forms each school year that include "a list of students who are currently members" and "proof of written parental permission from each member to renew such membership."

Yep. America sure has got it going on, boy howdy. *sighs* I want out of this world.

What I find interesting is that no rules prevent a group of students of any age from forming a club outside of school. None. No permission needed. The school is not involved. Even parents do not need to be involved. We did this quite often as teenagers.

No lawsuits followed. No school policies tried to reach beyond their jurisdiction. No parents objected, and some even volunteered to chaperone social events like a baseball game, movie night, or a trip to the skating rink.

Suddenly, it has become "normal" for busybodies to get involved in everyone's business but their own. They need a different hobby. Go outside and touch grass or something.

They lead empty, worthless lives. That's what it comes down to. I'm just counting the days at this point. I'm so done.

Didn't they use to have freedom of association there?  It would be great to bring it back.  I guess this is a step towards that, but it still sounds pretty heavily regulated.

I mean... I'd rather see them do that. At least it shows they learned how to be fair. Petty and intolerant, but fair. At least the entire student body can look back and see them for what they really were.
