Despite Washington State's strong Democratic leaning, having voted blue in every presidential election since 1988, recent polling data suggests that an anti-transgender sports ban on the ballot this November is more viable than the state's progressive reputation might suggest.
This November, Washington voters will consider a proposal, Initiative 638, that if passed, would require schools to "prohibit students it defines as 'biologically male' from competing" on girls' sports teams, and "require verification of biological sex by students' healthcare providers," according to the official language listed on the measure.
According to a new report from Seattle's NPR news station KUOW, Democrats and Republicans in the state may be more aligned on the measure than expected.
Let's Go Washington, the right-wing PAC backing Initiative 638, told KUOW their internal polling shows 56% of voters back the measure, including 73% of Republicans, 48% of Democrats, and 52% of independents.
Internal polling from partisan-aligned groups should generally be taken with a grain of salt; however, state Democratic spokesperson Stephen Reed sounded a warning sign for supporters of trans equality, telling KUOW, "What we have seen from our allies is that this will probably be close. This is not a slam dunk like some folks think it might be."
