The effects of a newly amended law rolling back self-determination for transgender people in India have been documented in a survey of those caught between medical ethics and the conservative government's anti-trans agenda: the doctors responsible for their trans patients' care.
The Trans Amendment Act was introduced in March by Bharatiya Janata (BJP), the right-wing nationalist governing party in India headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a staunch ally of President Donald Trump.
Opponents of the new bill, which ironically gutted some of the most progressive law addressing trans identity in any country, laid the blame at the feet of Trump and his crusade against trans identity, and Modi's complicity in bringing it to India.
"This Bill is nothing but trashy colonial legislation," Saket Gokhale, an Indian Parliament member with the opposition political party, All India Trinamool Congress, said when it was introduced in Parliament in March.
"If Donald Trump says there are two genders, our government will say there are two genders. We don't mind if we are going back in time. This country has a glorious history allowing people to recognize their gender identity, but if now Trump has said it, he must have thought it through," he said. "We have surrendered to Donald Trump."
