Tammy Sue Bakker, the daughter of famed televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, has apologized to those who have been "hurt" by her family's ministry and is urging people to donate to their local LGBTQ+ communities.
In an October 8 statement posted on social media, Tammy Sue explained that she has been estranged from her father since leaving his ministry in 2022 "because the message that was being delivered was not mine," and only learned of his recent death through a friend who saw the news online.
Jim Bakker, a protégé of Pat Robertson, built a multimillion-dollar conservative Christian television empire in the 70s and 80s alongside then-wife Tammy Faye. The couple divorced in 1992, while Bakker was serving a five-year prison sentence after being convicted of eight counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy related to mismanagement of his ministry's funds, including using them to cover up allegations of sexual assault and same-sex affairs — allegations Jim Bakker denied.
In her October 8 statement, Tammy Sue said she has stayed silent for most of her life, "not wanting to hurt my family or the church." But in the wake of her father's death, she wrote, "I'm thinking about my mother, Tammy Faye, and the unconditional love she showed. That love is also in my heart."
