Title: if the the universe is the answer to a question, what is the question?
Post by: Natasha on January 25, 2008, 07:52:37 AM
i ask purely to find out what other people's answers would be.  my answer is "what is the universe?".   in that scenario the universe would be a self manifesting answer based on each generation wanting to know what it is. of course that question or answer shows my love of loops and humerous philosophical possibilities. the other thought was that X+Y is the answer to what the question is, so the equation would be X+Y=universe, yes?

anyway please answer away.. i imagine there is an infinite supply of possible questions to answer my question. ;)

A question must always precede an answer or else it is not an answer, it is a statement. you are making a statement that the universe is an answer.

A question is: "a sentence of inquiry that asks for a reply"
An answer is: "a statement (either spoken or written) that is made in reply to a question "

Just a thought ;)

If the universe is an answer to a question, then the question very obviously is:

"What the hell?"

What are the symmetries of a three dimensional hypersphere with inverse curvature (possibly negative of vanishing) increasing linearly in some other dimension (with a relative negative sign in in the metric)?

(uh ... which is really just a technical version of Sara's question.)

Ask Douglas Addams....

I mean, he did figure out that the meaning of life, the universe and everything was 42....  and now that hes gone to the next realm/plain/whateverthehellyouwanttocallit he'll know what the proper question is too....

And my personal answer to the question at the moment <this is after putting in 45hrs at work in 4 days not including travle time and non pay time>  The universe is a figment of its own imagination... cuz techinacly it makes no sense.... and the only things that dont make sense are "sentient beings" and especialy the imaginations of "sentient beings"....  Really... Just look at some of your daydreams, and normal dreams... or even your nightmares.... do they really ever make sense?

Well, anyway, this is quite enough from your over worked, underpaid, semi sentient being known as the linnearone...

The universe is the answer to the question: What am I observing at the moment?  Our universe's history does not exist, according to this one scientist I forget his name, until we make an observation about it.  Then everything from as far back as we can see springs into existence for us.

I of course don't believe that.  The universe must already be there for us to observe.  The universe can still be the answer to: What am I observing at the moment?

What can I reach out and understand?

Even the universe hints at an origin of order and synchronicity like it had an intelligence of it's own. How could such order be without being born out of a thought to begin with. Einstein once quoted; a thought made into matter and energy in the ether of creation. God said Let there be light!

HUm...What happens if I do this......OH Drat.....BANG.

I would go with Dr Hawking answer.  It's probably REALLY REALLY BIG as Dougles Adams said, but not quite infinite.  To ants on a beach, the world is a universe beyound comprehension. Such are we looking out at the universe.

Maybe the universe is an alien wanting to show off how to make something out of nothing.  And the project simply got a bit out of hand.

The question would then be "How do I make something if I have nothing ?"

Give them television or religion.  Your pick.

Wise choice.  Its done its work in both places.
Title: Re: if the the universe is the answer to a question, what is the question?

I only watch the news on TV.  Most of the time there is nothing interesting and you simply can pass your life in front of it doing nothing at all.

I can also live without religion. I do however think that some religion should be there for the ones that need it.  The catholic church is as good as dead. Not all about it is bad.  I grew up with priests around me.  They were all nice people. And they all had a girlfriend and good for them too.  One told me he had the choice when he was young. Or he could go work in the mines or he could become a priest. He choose to become a priest.

But religion should not be a money thing or a power thing. It should be an example thing.  And it's not now. It's only used to reach a bad purpose. For obtaining political control for example.

What is the Universe?  Stuff,... the stuff of the universe.
I believe the correct scientific answer to the question 'what is the universe made of?' is stuff.

I`m sorry about this, the universe as you know it was a last minute science project, that fell off the seat of the school bus and got wrecked, I would have fixed it, but I didn`t have time, I made time for the make-up project in summer school.
