It's easiest to see the mainstreaming of gay culture in movies. Before the gay-liberation movement, cross-dressing in cinema was played for
laughs, and the characters were straight men "forced" into wigs and makeup by circumstance. Think Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot.
