Title: "Today" show story about M2F TS kidnapper (3-23-06)

This morning, the "Today" show had a story about a M2F who was the nanny to two kids for quite awhile. Well, she kidnapped the two kids and was found walking with them down a highway.
I would guess that GG women have been caught kidnapping before. What made this a story worthy of national coverage is apparently the fact that "when they took her to the police station, they found out she was a man!" The sentence above was said in a tone like it was a crime to be TS.
Katie, who I've liked before this, described this as being "like Tootsie and Transamerica." Well, not exactly, Katie. "Tootsie was the kids' father and he never attempted to kidnap them. "Transamerica" was about a TS crossing the country with her own son to get him settled and to go to L.A. to have a GRS. None of these activities in the movies is a crime. And yet, because the perpetrator of the kidnapping was TS (living as a woman for 20 years), it got nationwide coverage -- so much for "Transamerica" being a "help" to us. They lost the whole point of the movie: That we are people, too -- that we are capable, just like any human, of doing good and bad.
It's no wonder, given stories like this, that many TS's "hide in the closet." The police who talked to the press said something like "things can be seen on the surface as one thing, and then be another." He probably was talking about her appearance as a woman "when they found out she was a man." But hopefully he meant that the TS had some compelling reason to do this. Obviously, none of us applaud kidnapping but none of us wishes to be singled out for nationwide coverage just because we're TS.
Like others in society, if you cut us, we bleed.

People went to see Transamerica in order to talk about how "enlightened" they are, not to actually try and learn anything. As for the sensationalist story, the media will do whatever it can to get people to read/listen/whatever.

It ain't about enlightening or educating the public, it's about doing WHATEVER it takes to attract and hold the largest number of eyeballs and deliver those eyeballs to the sponsors.
Sex sells.
If it bleeds, it leads.
I make TV, but I really, really hate it (don't even get me started on Fair and Balanced "FOCKS")
So, how do you (we) counter that stuff -- stuff that plays to peoples' cherished, nurtured misperceptions? Are there any TV programs or movies or documentaries that deal honestly with transsexuality? The second prong to this is how do you break down the my-mind's-made-up-don't-confuese-me-with-the-facts barrier to real understanding?
I can see the problem, but I can't see the answer...

Hi, Karen -
How do we counter that stuff? If we had the audience of Comedy Channel's "Daily News," we could SPOOF the heck out of it:
REPORTER: "Karen, the pedophile turned out to be a.... (dramatic pause).... HETEROSEXUAL MARRIED MAN!
CUT TO POLICE CHIEF: "Yeah, I thought he was a NORMAL gay guy but then, when it turned out he was a... (--make a disgusted face as continue --) HETEROSEXUAL MARRIED MAN, well then, I guess it all makes sense.
REPORTER: "Yeah, you're right there, Chief. (Chief and reporter nod in knowing-way). Back now to Teri in the studio."
TERI: "Thanks for setting us straight, guys!"
REPORTER: "Part of our fair and balanced reporting, Teri. These heteroS-E-X-U-A-L-S just shouldn't be placed in a position where they're close to children.
TERI: "Know what you mean." (Teri's handed a piece of paper) "This just in from Karen. Karen, are you there?" (Teri looks into camera)

I have always said that we are just people and some of us are bad and most of us are good. You know for a fact that if we do something bad, we will hit the headlines. Well, how many times has a TS hit the headlines versus a priest. It seems like there would be more TS's hitting the headlines than priest as I believe there are more TS's in the country or world than priests. So the percentages are really against us and we still are hardly in the news, good or bad. I don't think a week goes by that some one is blaming a priest for fondling them. How about the rough behaviour of some of the Nuns in catholic school.

Terri Anne... that was too funny! It conveys exactly the stupidity of the slant of this story.
