Title: So what motivated your choice of screen-name?
Post by: lady amarant on February 10, 2008, 03:22:08 AM
"So, why Lady Amarant, I hear you all ask."

(Well, actually the silence is deafening, but I've got nothing better to do, so I thought I'd share it anyway  ::) )

Heard the new single by one of my favourite bands, Nightwish, a few months ago. The new vocalist is not as good as Tarja was, but this song just left me stunned. Since I already loved the Amaranth flower and its mythology of immortality and stuff, ... well, the rest is history!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdZn7k5rZLQ

And I love the video. Kinda echoes our own situations...

So that's me. What about y'all?

I am named after my Cat .... Buffy the Mouse Slayer, to give her the full title.

She was my companion from when I started transition and along with her brother (Willow).... yeah I am a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, used to put up with me practicing my voice.

I also now have a Persian called Aaragorn and a Horse called Khwanjeel.

But they are all Male, so it was Buffy!

I loved the name, "Emelye" ever since I was introduced to it from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, specifically The Knight's Tale which I had the good fortune of first learning about in high school and then studying in University.  I formerly used another screen name which grew on me to the point of my adopting it as my real name.  I decided I'd rather use a pseudonym online so I took the opportunity to use my other favorite feminine name.

Same name I use all over, music boards, political boards, academic boards (which are very boring boards).  It is the name of the person who helped me the most when I was young, and when she died in an auto wreck far before her time I thought I would honor her by using it.

I wanted something that was more like a screenname instead of what I had before, so I chose this. the Laura part is obvious, (duh)  :D the 91 I chose because 1991 was a very good year for me in the sense that I had found my musical niche. (its the only thing from my preteen/teen years that I can recall with any fondness), so that is why I chose that particular  number to go along with that particular name.

My name is Sheila. When I first started on Susan's, I thought I had to have my e-mail address name and that was sheila8369. Well, one of the listee's said that sounded too much like an address and she talked with Susan and they changed it to Sheila. That is my name and I love it and I'm glad to have just Sheila as my name on Susans.

Title: Re: So what motivated your choice of screen-name?
Post by: saraswatidevi on February 10, 2008, 03:40:28 PM
Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. Many sanscrit scholars and teachers take her name as part of their names.

I chose that name a couple of years ago when I was interested in the knowledge and wisdom without sexuality aspects. It really caught my attention that she could be the goddess of marital arts and asexual herself. I feel like I have both sexuality and asexuality going on in me at the same time. What fun!

The most important factor in my choice is the following. I was starting to do Sanscrit mantra; an hour or more a day.

Mantra is considered 'sacred speech'. Saraswati, as the goddess of speech in the primordial sense, represents a root to understanding of spiritual, material, and personal power through speech. Saraswati is that principle which, in Christianity, is referred to as "In the beginning was the Word." At its core mantra is magical speech and is ruled by the Saraswati principle. Saraswati is referred to as the 'essence of the Vedas' and the essence of the great Gayatri mantra for spiritual illumination (this is the one I do for an hour or more a day). She has other names in the Vedas.
. Eloquence
. Transcendental knowledge
. Speech in every aspect
. Nobel one
. Power of immense being
. Seed of the Word

In the RigVeda there is a quotation from Saraswati as follows:
" I Saraswati, as Divine Speech, make those whom I love formidable, one a Brahim, one a Rishi, another a sage. By the power of mantra they follow my path of divine speech and I enter into them."

So this is the complete answer to why I choose my screen name and also why so many sages and teachers append her name to theirs.

Devi just means goddess. And in Sanscrit sometimes a word or thought is repeated for emphasis.

Hope I haven't bored anyone to death with my explanation.

I used a name I'm actually planing to use.

Here is a couple quotes from a similar topic by me about my name.

Quote from: annajasmine on January 13, 2008, 07:29:28 PM
I have always thought about feminine names for my self(testing some out on EQ). In September decided take the leap and started HRT it not like I really had any other choice. So I decided to looked up meaning of names I did not like the meaning of the female version of my name. So I went with one mom called me few times when she gets excited when we were playing the cats. She shorten my nickname to (an-a) rather than Andy. I know it is not really shorter who know why she used it but I liked it and felt like it fit. I hope this won't cause her any issues when I come out. Jasmine I thought was a beautiful name and if I used for a first name my nickname could be Jaz. Also I thought Anna Jasmine went well together.

Quote from: annajasmine on January 13, 2008, 07:45:39 PM
Actually I kept my initials too. You know the story of my first name and the middle name I looked for a J name name because my mom named all of us kids with J names for middle names. I didn't want for her to think I didn't want to be her kid.

I picked "funnygrl" cus' i was always the class-clown / life of the party type of...err :-\...guy ???....GIRL ;). Plus, i heard it used one time by an aquaintance who was telling me and some friends once about a TG girl he met and he said "...well, she was like you know, one of those funny girls...".

I didn't find it offensive, and i use it as kind of an honor thing if that make's any sense...probably not.

Simone, i didn't know you liked 'death metal' too!!! I love "Nightwish" also, and "Opeth".

Post by: Pica Pica on February 11, 2008, 06:21:51 AM
Pica Pica is the latin name for the European m->-bleeped-<-ie,
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F8%2F8b%2FElster_wikipedia2.jpg%2F180px-Elster_wikipedia2.jpg&hash=9b088d7571a206c432a4733e40bbdc5d4e2917c5)
I've chosen the m->-bleeped-<-ie because it has a lot of folklore around it....

one is it's propensity for stealing shiny things - this is how I would like to approach life and gender - stealing the best bits.
There is also the rhyme,
   One for sorrow,
    Two for joy,
    Three for a girl,
    Four for a boy,
    Five for silver,
    Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.
Which sort of seems apposite and implying the vagaries of chance and stuff.

Then there is a lot of other m->-bleeped-<-ie stuff I hadn't heard of...apparently they are allied with satan, which is a bit unfair on the m->-bleeped-<-ie I say.

Um... because it's who I am.  It's short for Elisabeth, my name.  Most places, though, my screen name is Lisbethk24.  That dates back to my original GeoCities account.  Evidently there were already hundreds of Lisbeth's and 23 Lisbethk's, so it proposed adding 24, and I've kept that ever since.

Hi,
I picked the name Cynthia from a friend I had gone to a couple of dances with. She was a really beautiful, true friend.  It never got beyond being really good friends.  Her name stuck in my mind until the time came for my name change and I used hers,  *Cynthia.*

I truly felt honored to bear her name with much pride as well, after we each went our own way 12 years + ago

Now this is sounds like a Nero question (Please, get well soon, Nero).

I am retired from my work.  It was something that I loved and it was excitement in the office.  I was always looking at new ways to make things happen, to barter between my employer and the vendors.  It was like walking on the wings of and airplane.

When I adopted this nom de display I did it in memory of those brave and crazy women who walked on the wings of a Curtiss Jenny and barnstormed with the best troupes out there.

To you ladies who flew the skies without benefit of a seatbelt, please save a place for me!  I'm on the way to the biggest barnstorm there ever was.

I chose Jessi because it is short for my soon to be legal name Jessica.
That came about by asking my mom what she would have named me if I was born female.  I felt that she should have some say in it because I wanted her to know that I was and am still their child.  Sounds kinda mushy, but, that's how I felt.

kirakero comes from my real name, and my older screen name

Kero is the beast from an anime called Cardcaptor Sakura.  I chose to use that name because the beast was genderless.  Thus I could use it and not be defined as girl or boy online in my period of 'self awakening' and 'identity reconstruction'.

Kira is two things: One, derived in my case from kero.  (I had a friend who liked Kita as her name, so... all around the same lines).  Two, there was a girl in my seventh grade class, her name was Kira...  She was the only person to show me absolute kindness in middle school.  I ended up going to home school, but I still remember that day.  Coincidently, she is the only Kira I know from the real world, beside me of course.

Uhm, well, it's a story.

Moira means a lot of things. First of all, I really like the name and it's much like the name I will take when I change it officially (that name being Maria). Moirae is a term for the Fates in various mythologies. I sign my posts with Moi (french for "me"). Oh, and Moiraine is my favourite character in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Moira is probably also going to be my artist's name when I release an album.

The Midnigh part is also complex. I have been Moira-at-Midnight other places, since I rarely log on anywhere until it's 11 o'clock here, which makes it 12 o'clock for anyone a little further east than me. So that earned me the nick Midnight. Midnigh was, originally, a spelling error in Guitar Hero (naming my band, y'know), but it just stuck. Since I'm always on close to Midnight, I.e. Mid-nigh.

Put them together, you get moi. Also, I am quite fond of the letter M.

Revived the old thread, yeah, but I had considered starting my own anyway, so this was the lesser evil. I think it's always fun to see where people get their inspiration.

That's interesting. You sound like a rather intriguing girl. What sort of music you do?

I was toying with changing my online name to Kate already, and was shocked to find it hadn't been taken yet when I joined Susans. I figured hey, must be Fate, so who am I to argue?

I chose my name in honor of the women who walked on the wings of aircraft during the age of "barnstorming" that took place after World War I.  Some of my brothers and sisters here have had transitions and lives that seem to me to have felt a lot like going through the sound barrier without benefit of being inside an aircraft.  I chose it to honor them, too.

Well, I haven't written anything of my own for a while now. I've got quite a writer's block, might have something to do with all this change going on and my emotions wearing thin and all. Yada yada. It's getting better lately, and I hope to overcome it when I start moving out.

Once I get out of it and start writing again, it is singer/songwriter style. If you know Tina Dickow (Dico) and Tim Christensen, it's that kind of music I write on my own. With the band, we make 80's rock. With my friends, we make indie and electronica.

But I'd love to be just a girl and a guitar.

Years ago I picked Samantha just because it was the first thing to pop into my head.  Now, I don't know.  Yesterday I found a list of androgynous, mythological names online and I really liked Aeron.  He/She (there seems to be confusion on whether it was a God, Godess or both) was the God(ess) of Battle & Slaughter.  I've always been into gory, mythological games.  So, Aeron it will be!

Chaunte is a somewhat exotic morph of my male name.  And it is what I am known as here at Susan's.
