Title: When you were younger, what did you want to Do (JOB) when you grew up..
Post by: Jordan on February 12, 2008, 12:50:46 PM
I always wanted to go to space, I would give anything to leave the atmosphere ans free float around looking down at earth.

Then i learned what were the requirements to be a astronaut, and being that I was only a B student, it was already out of my reach.

Hey Mara,
It depends on my age. When I was really super young, like 6 or 7 I wanted to be an astronaut and a drummer. Then when I was like 9 or 10 to about 12 or 13 I wanted to be a veterinarian. My high school yearbook said my ambition was to be: "a businessman working with equities and building businesses." LOL!!! You think I was trying to prepare myself for life as a guy :)  Yeah. Then when I got into college I completely changed what I wanted to do. I had my heart set on being an English Professor. I switched major and got a degree in English Lit with minors in Philosophy and Latin. Then I wanted to go to law school. Then I got in the business world and recently, I've been pondering what I REALLY want to do with my life.

I think I'd really like and do well at being a therapist. We'll see how that pans out for me :) Meghan

Nice question by the way Mara!

I don't remember exactly what i wanted to to when I grew up and I am still not sure what I want to be when I grow up.  I think that going to school to be an RN will be a step in the right direction.

Do not put a block in front of you. People are buying their way into space. Be creative and look at life as an adventure not a job. Do what you want, not what society dictates you should do or the way you should do it. Know when to recognize marketing and have the intelligence to judge it for your desires not for the desire of the seller.

I've worked real hard at avoiding growing up.  Interestingly enough most of the people I meet would love to have my job, or the one I had before.

Grow up? I don't think so....to much responsibilty. I do often think though that ruling the world would be a pretty cool job...

I wanted to work in the space program.  I almost took a job working on a prototype of the space telescope at Boeing.  But other family forces were at work keeping me in the state of Utah.  You have to be from there to understand.

I've had a pretty good career as an electrical engineer.  I've been able to work in many different jobs from design work to marketing and everything in between.  Now I'm winding down to retire next month.... or move on to the next thing. I'm still relatively young and I live in a wonderful place.  There's not much work around these parts and I truly don't care!

Things I wanted to be:
Priest (but then I became a witch instead)
Farmer (but I then moved to a big city instead)
Vet (but I couldn't stand the sight of blood)
Police (but I hate when people yell)
Xerox Tech Rep (that's what my dad was)
Artist (turns out I prefer it as a hobby)
Computer repairman (I owned a computer repair shop, I decided I hated it)
But most of all I wanted to be a computer programmer.

In the end I became the programmer.

Hi Kiera, no problems. The last time I got abducted by Aliens I talked them into letting me pilot their ship. I will tell you though, that from my earliest recollections I have always been obsessed with space flight, the planets, especially Mars. Mars is my favorite she hasn't been a disappointment at all. Now that NASA has actually discovered and are admitting that the planet was once a water world 33,000, 000 years ago. I spent a lot of time in imagination back then and heck I still do. Too much reality can be detrimental to the mind. Mind might turn to mush, you know. I wouldn't want to turn into a neut, no way do I want that to happen. I like weird, more fun.

When I was young I was a straight A student, so of course my parents more or less expected me to be  lawyer or a doctor, but I since I excelled artistically, I wanted to be a cartoonist. Then after my accident at ten years of age, things changed, but I still had my artistic ability and I had pursued  drafting, but couldn't go that far with it because it required a lot of math, which I was lacking in. Right now I'm happy to have the knowledge of a home improvement business that I've been a part of for the past fourteen years, and the ability for writing suspense novels.

Cheez wiz man. If after transition you are lucky to keep the job you have or start something else that is more suited for a lady and you like the work you do, hang on to it tooth and nail. Being retired is not what it's all cut out to be. I am on my knees every night adding to my prayers to be useful again. Especially having a good chance at starting a drop in center and support group for Trans girls, and guys. I am just not ready to be put out to pasture yet. This old grey mare is quite alive and kicking.

I like to go fast, so maybe like a race car driver.. although I don't like nascar maybe like rally or something. I do have a former race car :-D
I would like to fly a fighter jet, but I don't believe in them as a use for war. And as some of others on here.. I would love to go into space, once you get there might not be fast.. its still something I would love to see and do. Sadly I have never reached any dreams.

The concept of retirement isn't to be lazy, it's to be uncommited?  Mmhmm.  10 horus of work a week is IDEAL.

If there's any uber rich guys who don't care about XY and XX, marry me:-O

I also wanted to be a JEDI MASTER.

I still do>.>

Growing up my dream was to be a girl.  I just wasn't sure that it was possible at the time.  Now that that has happened (well mostly) I can move on to other things.

I think I have a pretty good idea of what I will be when I grow up.
I want to be a RN and work in a nursing home.  I am starting school this fall to take some classes to be eligible to apply for the nursing program.  If I don't make it in the first time then I will work for another semester and do some volunteer work, etc, and then apply again, and again if necessary.  Normally a competitive program like ours would dissuade me from applying over again, but I feel that this is what I really want to do.

"Amen to that!!!" Tekla hon
I didn't really have any choice in retiering from my last job and I am doing everything I can to even just volunteering doing similar type of work except this time it is going to be working with Trans folks instead of mental health consumers, they became like a family. I can only just hope I can have the opportunity to do that with my sisters and brothers.

I've always had a variety of interests. I've gotten several out of the way now. I've worked as a mechanic on both automobiles and aircraft. I've worked on avionics systems. I raced cars for 2 years. I've worked as a medical assistant for several years now.
I'd like to work with hi-tech prosthetics. I've always been interested in robotics and who knows? I might even get a shot at that some time.

For someone who didn't even have have a high school equivalent I did manage to get the education required to secure employment as a Social Worker. Those twenty years were the best twenty years I have had on a job, I never had any other job I liked as much in. I worked at prior to that. I don't know, but trying to help others in need is what was, and still is in my heart. And Audry my dream of being a girl never diminished though the years and at least I am thankful I had the honor to serve as a Social Worker for the last 8 years as Cindy.

I know people who do jobs they went to college for, and others, well we work, its just not a traditional application - which does not mean we are not using our education.

Anyone who works as a social worker has my love and respect.  I know I could not do it.

I just don't like the "boys are doctors, girls are nurses' deal, and even less from those who are otherwise trying to shatter gender lines.

What I do, and what I love to do, is not possible at any sort of non professional or part time level.  You do it, or not.  No in-between.

And I joke - though I'm not kidding - that I took my retirement up front, when I was in my 20s and could still enjoy it (despite the fact I had no money) rather than at the tail end, when I had money, but no physical ability to do it anymore, regardless of what 'it' was.

HAHA, Thats kind of funny Tekla that you said that about your retirement.  A friend of mine who is in his fifties has always said the same thing.  He went to cali during the hippie days and lived it up.  He is always telling me about the eccentric people he was friends with and seeing the rolling stones.  Actually he was the first person that I came out to.

I wanted to be:

An Oceanographer - I went through a stage where I was obsessed with the oceans and the life in them.
An Astronaut - What kid didn't want to be one at some point?
A Computer Game tester - Too bad it rarely pays well.
A Comic Book Artist - I wish I'd stuck with this one, only recently have revived my art talents.
A Psychologist - Another that I kind of wonder how things would be different had I persued it.  I really like the idea of helping people.

I ended up going to college for a couple years (no degree though) and then got hired on at a software company that I've been working at for the past 8 1/2 years doing support and later software testing.  Not the happiest career choice I could have made, but at least it pays pretty decent.

Well I grew up in Cali, so it was not a choice, just a chance.  And that white boy walking the streets of Tangiers after hours like a total idiot, or laying on the beach at Goa stoned out of my mind - yeah, I've been there.  Road a Ossa 250 from San Diego to Rio de Janeiro , so stupid I can't even imagine it now, yeah, I did that crap too. (not to mention having sex with a ->-bleeped-<- in Rio, I'm lucky to be alive for sure. - And that is not even mentioning crossing the border into Nicaragua while Reagan was President - had to clean my pants after that one.)

But it sure beats playing golf.

And, if nothing else, once you have had a couple of very foreign guys lock and load a few AKs on you when you are far from home, those teen age girls in the mall are no big deal.
