Lawrence King, an eighth grader who identified as gay and wore makeup and nail polish, was 15 when he was declared brain dead on Feb. 13. The day before, he had been shot in the head in an Oxnard, Calif., classroom full of students. Police have charged a sweet-faced boy called Brandon McInerney, 14, with first-degree murder and with a hate crime. According to the Los Angeles Times and KTLA, McInerney and some other boys accosted King about his sexuality on Feb. 11. Students apparently often taunted King, who didn't even have a safe home to return to after school: he was living in a shelter for abused and troubled children.

The crime, a chilling execution carried out in a typical suburban school — allegedly by a boy who probably hasn't started shaving — has shocked Oxnard and captured the attention of gay and transgender activists around the country.

In the article it is quotes a statistic that says "Fully 78% of gay and transgendered children feel safe at school".
This is supposed to be a GOOD statistic? Why isn't it 100%?! Why should any child fear to go to school for any reason? This is pathetic!
They spun it like the killing of this child was overblown! When is the execution of a child OVERBLOWN!
Why isn't everyone outraged!
I'm sure that if the situation were reversed that everyone from the KKK to that make believe evangelist would have made their feelings known.
This is equality?

This story is extremely heartbreaking! :( Poor Larry had such a horrible life, it makes me sick to think of the constant emotional pain he was in, and all the hopes and dreams he had that might eventuate one day, and then out of nowhere a jerk with a gun decides to end it all!!!
I am so angry!!! >:( >:( >:( >:(
Why aren't schools safe?? Why do all these killings keep happening? Children need protection, in their homes and in their schools. Why is a gun the answer to everyones problems?
