There are various theories for transsexuality, many around suspicions of pre-natal hormone levels.
DES (Diethylstilbestrol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diethylstilbestrol)) is an artificial estrogen used by pregnant women in the past.
Stress during the early stages of pregnancy is another indication under investigation.
Thyroid irregularities is something that I have never seen addressed.

My mother took thyroid medications (and so do I).  She most likely had DES it was very popular at the time I was born (40's), especially with military wives.   I also had a one year older male/female sibling who never left the hospital (birth certificate said female, death certificate said male).

I have never heard any study on thyroid issues.

My mother and I both have probs with our thyroid. Mine makes me very ill and weak. But I'm on meds for it now (in addition to all the other meds I'm taking  :P).

It depends. All studies and theories are in some way flawed. Maybe stress actaullly causes some chemicals SOMETIMES to be released which MAY possibly interact with the brain. WHO KNOWS? maybe it doesn't

My mother did have a LOT OF stress when she was having me.- maybe it's the cause of my GID maybe it is because of not enough T or insensitivity to T.

I am on medication for an underactive thyroid.  The medication I take is Amour Thyro, and shortly after taking it feel a sort of calm and with more energy.

Ive not heard of this before but my mother was also on thyroid meds when I was born. That would be very interesting
if that is the common link that ties us all together.

I'd love to see how many of us had mothers on thyroid meds.

My mother too has thyroid problems but they were not manifest until just a few years ago.  However, she has told me that her doctor had prescribed uppers for her while she was pregnant for me.

We search in vain for a reason.  We, as outsiders to the medical profession, can only stand by and hope for the kind of research that will show why.  But you know.... it doesn't matter.  Here we are and there is the issue/problem.  Ya gotta deal with it hon.  There are tools to do that.  It's called money.

In my experience does not depend on hormone levels.
My gender has been the same regardless of what my hormone's were doing.

There are various theories and all should be taken seriously and it's obvious that something goes wrong during development in the womb. I'm looking forward to the day when a condition such as gender dysphoria is seen as genetic and not just down to the assumption analogy that it's just a man or woman who feels they are trapped in the wrong body.....

My thoughts exactly.  The cause can't change where you are now or whether you transition are not.  Don't waste time searching for a reason why because the answer(s) is unknowable at this time.  Whereas you know you were born this way, just get on with it.
