Title: Pics of my custom VW bug!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Audrey on March 17, 2008, 03:18:08 PM
Here are some pics of my 74' bug that I chopped the top on and did some other custom work to.  I did all of the work myself including paint, body, and engine work.

It still needs rims and some other minor things like new seats.  I am going to find a nice pair of leather power heated bucket seats and change out the old crappy vw seats that have no cushion left.  In a few years when the paint starts to look crappy I am going to shave the driprail before I repaint it.

Rims... Driprails... Bucket Seats... I didn't understand a word of what you said hon, except for maybe the first two sentences, but it's really pretty!

Nice, especially the chop. (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bikeguide.org%2Fforums%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Fthumbsup.gif&hash=bbbeb6d5f729b616bef22e2a72e1c24b3535df54)
The heated seats are probably a good idea unless your bug has better heating than most which is usually :icon_censored:. I would consider cloth though, leather and vinyl suck when it is hot or cold. You freeze in winter, and sweat when it is warm. If you watch the rodders, a lot of them toss a t-shirt over it when they are driving to make it more breathable.

Is this going to be a daily driver or is this your toy? Either way, it looks good. (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bikeguide.org%2Fforums%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Fcheers2.gif&hash=5a1daa84158c2362b0fbd56a4e73e2eecd0fdb0e)

nice weather daily driver.  Its going to be even more fun to drive when I get my two barrel progressive carb to give it a little more oooomph and a gene berg shifter.  And yeah I won't turn down cloth seats if i can find some in good shape.  When I get out of nursing school I am going restore my 73 VW thing as well.

Impressive work.

Most of my mechanical DIY project end in magnificent failure. I was so happy the time I got a new kickstand on my bike properly installed!

Congrats, and happy tinkering.

Hi Audry, "wow!" beautiful job. There are still a few VW bugs around but they are becoming more scarce.

"Hee, hee, hee." Choping, Rims... Driprails... Bucket Seats sound familiar enough. Although that was years ago since I did work on these, they use to call them welfare cars. I completely restored a 1968 Pontiac Parisian one, redid the body and got it painted turquoise on the outside which was somewhat of an unique color for a car back then. I completely restored the interior with plush carpet on both ceiling and floor and put up the pom poms and the big dice. My hippie mobile. "hee, hee, hee." I was still dressing like a hippie back then complete with the long hair.

Just remembered, that was hard on the nails. ;D

That's awesome work Audrey. I had a older  bug in college, it did not look quite as nice. I love the color!

Very nice Chop job,  I like the recessed headlights too.  Ha I had a 71 VW Bus for about 12 years.  Love the old air cooled VW's

Best of luck with the Carb work.  Are you going to use a webber carb.

A weber progressive carb will be here in aweek I cant wait.  oh and did I mention bumpers, I broke a hydralic pipe bender making the first one.  maybe it doesn't have to be 1/4 steel.   ;)  oh well.  I will probably repaint it that copper metallic color that the newer cars have in a few years when I tire of the green.

The real fun will begin once I graduate nursing school and have money to put into my Thing (after SRS of course, I still have priorities).  I want a turbo charged beast of a motor and jack it up a few inches with big off road tires, and a winch on the front, with a pearl yellow paint job.  Manly sounding yes I know but it will be able to go anywhere a four wheel drive truck will be able to.  That will help with my motivation to get through school.

You have a VW Thing! Oh, I am so jealous. That's like my favorite car of all time.

Copper bumpers would look great with that green, Audrey. If you can find some of that metallic copper paint, that'd look awesome imo.

Sounds like fun, those are amazing vehicles, they seem capable of almost anything. I never understood why they never caught on more.

Holy crap!  I love it!  I'm more into motorcycles myself, but that's an amazing ride right there.  You'll have to show it off when it's fully decked out.

Audrey -
Great job!  That engine looks clean enough to eat off of....

I'm glad that you have this as a hobby.  From nurses I work with, you'll need some stress relief as you continue to progress and get yourself promoted.  Most people are nice, it seems, until they're sick, then they turn into Mr. and Ms. Frankenstein.  Instead of taking it out on the patients, you can come home
and take out your aggressions on your project.

I'm proud of you, too.  We need all the nurses we can get - no one wants to work that hard any more, it seems.

Take care.

Carol

P.S.  enjoyed your blog, too, about Suki!
