Title: high prolactin, before hrt
Post by: jenny_ on March 17, 2008, 06:59:18 PM
i'm seeing my psychiatrist on Thursday and he said last time that he might prescribe hrt this time, if my bloods came back ok.

the results came back, and my gp told me that my prolactin levels were abnormally high, then after asking me lots about whether i'd been self-medicating (which i haven't) he came to the conclusion that it was a side effect of my anti-anxiety medication since high prolactin is a possible side-effect.

but what does high prolactin mean? is it bad? i'm really worried that i won't be allowed to start hrt for ages now  :(.  might that happen?

Hi, Jenny,

Try this link: http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/prolactin/test.html

It was a lot simpler than others.

thanks nichole.  i've looked at the link and other sites and its all about the causes of it and treating the causes of high prolactin. and my gp is dealing with it.

but i was worried that i won't be allowed to start hrt, because oestrogen can also raise prolactin levels and they're high to start with.

That is a valid concern, Jenny.

But, don't panic. Work with the doctor and get all of the info you can to become somewhat conversant with possible problems and difficulties. Discover solutions. There are a few.

Question is this, basically, would you rather have the oestrogen and have a prolactinoma or would you rather have the oestrogen and work through your transition without a problem?
