Tim Brown, Youth and Young Adult Coordinator for the UCC Coalition on GBT concerns, will give four workshops n the Kansas City area n late March.
Too often, the religious right misuses a few passages from the Bible to justify the oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Young people often do not know how to respond to these texts or what hey really mean. As result, any conversation with the religious right, be it in person or in society, can become an invitation to LGBT people to feel poorly about themselves.
This workshop analyzes each of the so-called slammer passages " in detail, removing the fear hey can instill. Included will be examination of contexts and translations. The workshop also empowers young people to feel positively about he combination of being LGBT and a person of faith, no matter the faith, by looking at other passages from both testaments.

I read a comment on a Pams' House Blend article, regarding Oklahoma's Sally Kern and her appearance on a TV show to discuss what she said about gay people, that I found interesting. The commenter said that debating biblical passages with homobigots like Kern is really a no win situation because it acquiesces to the basic assumption that biblical doctrine should be used to determine public policy.
I suppose the study of relevant passages is a very good thing, for those glbt people who are Christian, on a personal level but I would suggest that this same information is useless when debating with the christofascists about our civil rights. I believe we need to hammer on the fact that religious belief has no business being imposed on others in a truly democratic society.

I agree 110% on that one. Ultimately the Bible is just a rationalisation of an emotional fear reaction anyway, and debating it really does not serve any purpose ... unless you're a masochist like me who actually enjoys it! >:D

The Bible belongs in church.... and it should stay there.
Please keep this Bible nonsense out of my government! We are a nation of many people with many religions. I don't see them standing up and quoting their religious texts to support their policies. What gall we have to presume that "our" book has relevance in "their" lives? I am truly sick and tired of this flotsam.

Maybe all the Buddhists, Wiccans, Jews, Muslims, Shintoists, Taoists... all should start standing up and quoting scripture...
