Title: Favorite Genre of Music?
Post by: wolfie on June 10, 2006, 02:57:59 AM
Never hurts to get to know everyone on here more. Music is a huge part of my life. Proud to admit that I'm a country boy (stuck in the city), artists: Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, Aaron Lines, and of course Johnny Cash. Also loving the classic rock, big Guns n Roses fan.

How about you?

Honestly I try to avoid generic-type of thinking. Genres to me exist for the convenience of record-store clerks. And the record promo guys etc.
I'm into Frank Zappa, for one. Classified as 'alternative-punk' when you get the track names in iTunes, that 'genre' is way off, 'cause they couldn't put that into a box.
I go bigtime for what is called Karnataka or Carnatic music. Southern India raga, Dhrupad music.
I thought The Residents were entertaining. I like No Doubt, a really good band with a beautiful recorded sound and some real space for Gwen's voice sculpted there.
Miles Davis. Average White Band rocks. Le Sacre du Printemps by Stravinsky. Little Richard. Eric Dolphy. Johnny 'Guitar' Watson.
I think a country singer should sound more tore up than that more poppy stuff, above. Hank Williams Lonesome Whistle Blow.
:D

For me, its a 3-way tie.

Instrumental movie themes.  It becomes a writing-aid for me.

Celtic.  Traditional and contemporary/folk.

Country. I have seven different country stations on my truck radio.  A few months in Oklahoma can do that to a girl!  ;)

Jeez... I worked on a production of Oklahoma more than 30 years ago, and that damn song still sticks in my head sometimes!

I agree about genres; I don't know how to classify my tastes, so here's a random sampling of what's on my hard drive:

Louis Armstrong, Asleep at the Wheel, Long John Baldry, Marcia Ball, Blondie, David Bowie, Dave Brubeck, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Cab Calloway, the Clash, Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Elvis Costello, Country Joe & the Fish, Miles Davis, the Doors, Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, George Gershwin, Woody Guthrie, the Hollies, Janis Ian, the Jefferson Airplane, John Mayall, Carole King, the Kingston Trio, the Kinks, Cyndi Lauper, the Leningrad Cowboys, John Lennon, Glenn Miller, Phil Ochs, Iggy Pop, the Quicksilver Messenger Service, Lou Reed, Todd Rundgren, Doug Sahm, the Sex Pistols, Paul Simon, Patti Smith, Dusty Springfield, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Tom Waits, Bob Wills, Neil Young, Frank Zappa, and the Zombies.

If you can find a pattern there, you're welcome to it...

no pattern; it's music isn't it. Though I could draw a line from Armstrong to Zappa
the ZOMBIES.

Well it's too late to say you're sorry
How would I know? Why should I care?

I can enjoy most music from Gospel to Hardhouse and Techno, and it would be hard to pick a favorite because it sort of depends on the mood I am in.

Have you ever watched music videos played by computer rendered machines like Pipe Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAvPRbh0jmE)?

Enjoy it? Many pages more here (http://www.youtube.com/results?search=animusic&search_type=search_videos&search=Search).

Hey Wolfie, what's up?
This is a very cool post because I am a music freak myself.  Although I can't say that I lean toward the country end of things, I do like Garth brooks (have a couple of his CD's).  My all time, forever, favorite genre of music would be pure rock!!  I too am a Guns and Roses fan (Marco dispises them, so I don't listen to them around him).  I was supposed to see them back in 1987(yikes  :icon_yikes: I'm dating myself), but Axle had a throat issue so L.A. Guns played in their place.
My all time favorite band is Journey (Marco and I have matching Journey tatoos on the left sides of our chests).  Marco's and my first date (shall we say) was to a Journey concert last year.  More of my favorites are Rush (awesome Canadian band!  ;D), Metallica, Linkin Park and Creed.
When I was growing up, my dad had a huge pipe organ that he had a special, accoustically sound room added onto our house for.  So I guess you could say that I was raised on classical music.  I always thought when I was little that I would never listen to classical music when I got older, but I have been known to throw my Bach CD in at times when I want to mellow out.  I guess I have grown to appreciate that music...some of my favorites are the biggies like Bach, Beethoven, Motzart and Tzaichowski.

Well, I think that covers a broad enough spectrum!

Take care and tell Spike Hi!!!  ;D ;D

And a wonderful little organ piece, Little Fugue in G minor (a favorite key) by JS BAch.

I once got to play a pipe organ when I was 16 in an old German church, my grandfather was a Lutheran minister, on a Saturday while the women cleaned.  A real blast - until they threw me out, that is!

The music I like?  I mostly listen to jazz nowadays but, as Duke Ellington once said, "If it sounds good, it IS good."  I wholeheartedly agree.

BTW - I LOVE the music from Oklahoma!  Rogers and Hammerstein, wasn't it?  The movie was nice too, with Shirley Jones and Gorden mcCrae.  I loved "The Sound of Music" too - the music's so good it makes me cry even though I think Julie Andrews is a bit shrill.

I'm sorry Wolfie that I am using your thread to discuss with others, but I just can't resist.  It's not everyday that you find people that you can discuss classical music with!!!

First, jan c:
Yes my dad had a pipe organ right there in our home.  It is sure strange that you would mention E. Power Biggs!!!!  The organ that my dad had was E. Power Biggs' travelling organ!!!! To see it, it is hard to imagine that it is someone's travelling organ, but it was!  That is so COOLLLL!

Second, HelenW:
Very strange that you would mention Bach's Fugue in G Minor.  My personal favorite of Bach's!!!  It was also one of my dad's favorites and he would play it a lot.  It is my comfort music!

;D ;D ;D

it's all good, that's what i wanted this to be, there's not really a lot of music discussed here.

and pam, amy says hi and says she misses talking to you. she's been really busy with work lately and we're still trying to unpack stuff and get settled in the new place.

It all depends on what I am doing at the time.  In my car it is a mixture of Darkwave, Classic Rock, Heavy Metal, and even a bit of J-Pop.  When I play I like Darkwave and techno mixes.  When I am kicked back with a Margarita or whatever her name might be <G>, classical music and celtic music are the top choices for me.

IF I am stuck with the radio, I tend to flip around the dial for a bit and move opn when a song I hate comes on or a commercial hits.

For me it would be Journey, Boston, Aero Smith, Steve Miller, Billy Joel, Elton John, Queen, Styx, some Rush, Dobbie Brothers. Thats all I can think of for now.

Balligomingo, Delerium, Conjure One, Dido, The Coors, Moby, Amethystium, Ivy, Poe, Adiemus, Enigma, Collective Soul, Michelle Branch, Garbage, Sarah Brightman, Bachelor Girl...

Difficult to classify into a genre, but most of this revolves around a particular sound... a certain delicious audio "richness," kinda like "aural candy." Definately headphones music. I *feel* it right down to my toes ;)

I do still find myself digging up 80s/90s rock as well (Marco's list is great) - the stuff I grew up with. Boston being a particular fav of mine.

hmmm what a fun thread^^

Bauhaus, Delibes, Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, Maria Callas, Puccini, any rave/hard house/acid, Love and Rockets, Mario Lanza, Tchaikovsky, Radiohead, Waterboys, Gang of Four, Queen, 50s-present, and some old country.

Growing up in household with 3 generations afforded me the oppurtunity to listen to a wide variety of music. My mother focused more on opera and classical while the teenagers in the house listened more to Elton John and the Beatles.

elizabeth,

wow that was a great list. i didn't even think of some of those, but now that i've read it i'm going to go download some tunes for the computer. (there's about 9 i could have added to!) my list was far from extensive, but i can't believe i didn't put one of my all time favorites...

i was SO excited to see you put coheed and cambria down!! what's your favorite song of theirs?

i've been following them for a long time. my co-worker introduced me to their music, had me listening to it for awhile and asked me what i thought of them. i told him that i loved their music, it's original and it's great that they're telling a story through out all of their albums. that day he told me that his brother used to play with travis stever (the guitarist) in arizona when they were in high school (around that age). now he could have just been making it up, but he's really not that kind of guy... plus he had signed cd's, pretty cool stuff. hope they come to canada soon. they're not going to on this tour, but i hope in the next 2 years they do.

I like classical music, opera, jazz, and the pop/rock/folk music of the 50's and 60's.  Bach is my favorite composer, Puccini is my favorite for opera, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong for jazz, and Simon and Garfunkle in pop music.  My taste in classical music is quite varied, my CD collection includes Wendy Carlos and the Kronos Quartet, as well as Yo Yo Ma, Leonard Slatkin, Glen Gould, etc.  For the last several years my wife and I have had season tickets to the Kansas City Lyric Opera--they do four productions a year.  The first performance of the Fall will be "Madame Butterfly"--one of my favorites.  If you are in need of a good cry I recommend Butterfly's aria "Un Bel Di"--if you have a dry eye after listening to that then you are emotionally dead.

hi jaded,

yes, i do play a couple instruments. i used to play the drums for awhile in jr. - sr. high (as well as trumpet in our dorky little band).

i've been playing guitar since i was 14. the first one i bought was a fender acoustic electric, then i went to a fender strat. i play a lot of country and write a lot of my own songs on my acoustic. i love my strat for hendrix, guns n roses, coheed and cambria, metallica, foo fighters, and nirvana.

what you about? any instruments? if not, what would you want to play?

nice meeting you officially

hi tino i play drums since i was 8 and i also play guitar, piano and other percussions i also write songs and music
why did you stop playing drums?
Title: Re: Favorite Genre of Music?
Post by: wolfie on June 17, 2006, 03:21:46 AM
i loved the drums, but i always felt that i was meant to write and sing music and i thought the best way to do that was to learn the guitar. i play the piano since i was 3 years old until i was 14. i didn't go the full classical route like my brother and sister, instead when i was 9 i switched to jazz and composition. learned a lot of theory and rhythm. looking back i'm really happy i did go through those 5 years of intense lessons and work because i was then able to apply that to my guitar and picked it up really quickly. i can play by ear because of the piano as well.

i can't remember a single thing on the piano anymore (wierd huh?), but i'm sure that if i got back on a drum set i would be good to go.

how long have you been playing guitar for? what kind of music do you write?

First, to Elizabeth:  Wow that is quite an extensive list.  I'm with Tino, there were several on there that I would have put on my list, but I must have been brain dead when I originally posted.  You put Tesla on there.  They are one of my all time favorites.  The really rock!  Modern Day Cowboy is one of the best tunes!

Now, to Tino:  You have a Fender Strat...well here's another parallel for you.  I have one too.  What color is yours?  Mine is off white with a light neck.  I got it back in 1986 when my dream was to be in a rock band.  Now, here's the difference.  You can play yours, and I can't.  I guess I should say I just haven't put the time needed to learn into it.  I too played the piano when I was younger.  That is where I learned to read music and all the theory stuff, then I played the clarinet and oboe in our dorky huge band at school.  I picked up the clarinet and oboe very quickly, but when I went to the guitar, I wasn't catching on and was getting frustrated.  I can play smoke on the water and that's about it.  Hey...it's never too late, I will learn it someday.

jaded,

write anytime, anywhere. i have a notebook around at all times because i never know when i'll get some inspiration or some really great lines will come to me. i have a pad of paper filled with random lyrics and ideas that come to me. most of the time i never use them, but atleast they're there just in case i feel i need to bank on that one day.

and to pam,

my strat is black with white. all of my guitars i've ever had have been black and white (i like sticking to my little box of "color"). when i used to do gigs, i would wear black pants, black dress shirt, white beater underneath and a white tie loose around my neck (not a big tie fan, so not always). i would love to get a white fadora if i do ever end up back on stage... i'm also trying to get amy to let my grooms men wear them at the wedding!!!!

and maybe i can give you a few power lessons when you come out here in april. i've taught a few people to play when i went to "camp" a little while ago (that's what my family likes to call my little trip). you do have 28 days to teach someone, that's lots of time.

Wolfie,

Because I always listen the the entire record, album or Cd, I rarely know that names of songs. I really like the new Coheed and Cambria CD, particularly track 13, but I really like the whole CD and have listened to this in my car exclusively for the last month. I am now on to the previous CD which I almost like as much as it is a great record also.  All in all, the new one is my favorite.

Yea, I've tried guitar... and finally had to accept it just wasn't going to happen.

I can play "Stairway to Heaven" reasonably well, and I do a pretty mean "Wish You Were Here" (which is GREAT to play/sing when you've just had it with the world, lol)... and then my fingers cramp and callous and I give up :)

I can play guitar as well, but not very well.  I decided to give up on it.  Piano is really my "Forte".  I used to also play clarinet.  The nice thing about these particular instruments is that they are not gender oriented and I'm not afraid of telling people I used to play them while out as female.

Rather than lising bands, I'll just list my fav. genres. So here goes: Heavy Metal, Jazz, Gothic, Electronica, Industrial, New Age stuffs, Tradional East Indian and Japanese music, Soundtracks, Musicals, etc... I own about 40 gigs of music. So I'll just put down that I have eclectic tastes. lol
