Title: Looking for a bit of help
Post by: darnelljbradley on July 03, 2006, 03:08:36 PM
My name is Darnell Bradley, and I am a doctoral student at Northern Illinois University.

For my dissertation, I am conducting a study of Transgender Identity Formation in African American MtF. I hope to learn how you arrived at your self discovery and the role of your family and your church or religious affiliation.

Once you elect to participate, we will set a time to connect via AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger-(or your preferred instant messaging service). The conversations have no time limit, however you may terminate the conversation any time if you no longer wish to continue.

Your responses will be used to expand the knowledge base within the African American community, and how we can better understand ourselves. In the reporting of the data, any information that can be identified with you will remain confidential and will not be disclosed.

Hey there Doll!

So far I have found out that people who are TG have a very complicated time in our society. As to why I chose to focus on African Americans, well for one, I am African American!   :D Also, gay and lesbian research shows that African Americans are not more homophobic than other ethnicities-except when it comes to those who attend church. I'm interested to find out how church impacts TG identity.

Do you know anyone you can recommend to me?

That would be fantastic if they wanted to speak with me! My email is simple-my name, darnelljbradley@yahoo.com.

Mixed background is fine too, its up to you determine if you feel you have lived the Afr. Am. experience enough to speak from that perspective. What do you think?

I think it is a good idea.

Has anything changed read improved for TS students there at NIU.  For when I showed up there in 2000 my reception by the psychologist was not professional let alone understanding or helpful.  I have emailed you the story and it is in my introductory post.  Basically

It did the same with me.  Said his email address does not exist.  I checked out NIU's website and the person by that name I do not think would be a psychologist or student of psychology.

"Darnell Bradley
University Programming and Activities
As program coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Darnell Bradley will work on educational programs and currently is working with the Marett Scholarship, IMPACT, Tony Fusaro Leadership Institute, Greek Week and all educational speakers. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Eastern Illinois University and is pursuing his Ph.D. in political science here at NIU. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. His spare time is spent relaxing with his wife, LaTania, and his two sons, Javin and London."

Based on this info it seems he wasn't looking for scholarly research.  :-/

Hmm, I happen to attend the school he mentions, though I am not familiar with him, nor do I fit in the criteria of what he is looking for,  I would look upon his request with some skeptisism; not really for any reason than he hasn't bothered to respond to any queries here.  Obviously that is a concern.

But this research he is doing, assuming he is legit, is governed by some strict regulations and clearances for some ethical boards at the university (the exact acronyms escape me now, I apologize).  I'm not a PhD student (yet), but my master's thesis may run into those kind of human research areas; though I've been out of school for 3 months (summer!) and so I am kind of blocked right now.

Just an idea, Darnell, that you should probably ensure that this is cleared with them.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, PM me here on susans and I'll get you the required URLs.

Thanks

beatrix
