"CAN GUYS, IF they're plural, be dolls? The debate resurfaced recently
in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after reader Eugene P. Foley complained
about waiters who greet men and women as "you guys."

I know it's technically wrong and stuff, but pretty-much anybody aged 30 or younger uses it as a unisex term without batting an eyelid. I do occasionally catch myself and switch to something else, but really, very few people care.

I'm aware that it's so entrenched in popular usage that nothing can be done about it. But I still don't like it. I'm trying to remember not to say it to women-- but years of habit are hard to break.

hey guys!! <at everyone LoL>
Or even worse...

Hey Dude!!  <at everyone>  whats this world coming to when something that was meant for only one gender is sudnly a common term for any living breathing human under the age of 40 <or 30 as the case might be>

Its not like it does any damage or people will look at you weird if your addressed like that... so no worries.

I know a couple of people who use Dudes for everything and everyone. I noticed it had pretty heavy usage with some groups of younger women as well.

Eh, whatever.

I don't really call people dude, I use it as more of an exclamation- "Duuuuuuude!" if I'm shocked about something, lol.  It doesn't matter if I'm talking to a woman or a man.  But I don't say it very often.

I do call groups of people 'guys.'  I suppose because.. what else am I supposed to call them? "Guys and girls" is too long, sounds a little awkward.. "people" isn't really as informal..

(old post, I know)

I call everyone "Dude" unless they look like and act like a woman.
And when someone says "Hey guys!" when I'm around, i just smile. I'm not one otherwise to people.
