Title: leg waxing
Post by: Hypatia on June 16, 2008, 02:20:07 AM
I don't shave my legs because I can't stand the stubble. I need the long-lasting smoothness you get from waxing. As for the pain, I don't mind it. It really doesn't hurt that much. Waxing is way better than shaving because you do it once and the hair is gone for weeks. Shaving only lops off the outer part of the hair, and the hair shaft under the skin comes out right away--already thick in diameter, making for a rough and ugly stubble. But after waxing, it grows out fine and soft. So for me waxing is a no-brainer.

The downside is that you have to wait until the hair grows back long enough to wax it again. That means a period of some weeks with increasing leg hair. In the winter, it isn't a problem, I wear tights anyway. But summertime means bare legs and the waiting-to-wax phase interferes with that. So far the only solution I've found is to wear long skirts while my leg hair is growing out. Fortunately I like long skirts. But it would be nice to vary the skirt length once in a while.

Laser on my legs would be nice but I have no money for it. I save money by doing my own legs with sugar. Just wish I didn't have to spend every so often with hairy legs for it to work.

Hello, Hypatia,

May I suggest that you try using a Braun SilkEpil epilator?  It's neater and less time consuming than wax, can be used more frequently than wax to keep legs smoother longer, and is easy to fit in a travel kit.  Cost is $50 or so, available in many stores.

Sounds like an infomercial.  Sorry!

Hi Hypatia
Wing Walker is right. Six years ago when I met her she introduced me to the epilator. At first I didn't like it much, it left more hair than it pulled out, so I went back to shaving my legs, chest and arms again. But I found that after a couple of years my body hair wasn't as thick and bristly as it use to be, so I again tried epilating. I found that epilating was quite sufficient in removing that wretched thinned out hair off. I can now go for 10 to 11 days between epilating sessions. The hairs just got so much finer after a time that it is almost non-existant. Well considering that when I started out I had thick dark curly body hair on chest legs and arms and now it is next to nothing. I believe that doing HRT over a span of 8 years had a lot to do with the hair thining and the epilator finished the job.

And it works on shorter hairs too  :)

I know I'm a glutton for punishment, but I use hard wax when I wax... the hair only needs to be a 16th of an inch long if that.... and no strips... the down side is its a little more messy in some cases... and this wax doesn't come off unless its ripped off or you take a while with some petroleum jelly...

The upside is... its awesome on everything... and by everything I mean EVERYTHING.... I use it on my brows, legs and most everywhere else... I even used to use it on my face prior to starting laser...

I haven't used it recently though because it requires a microwave oven, and I haven't a place to set it up...

Hi Hypatia,

I agree, I have had my SilkEpil for a month now and tonight was the first time I have redone my legs since I first used it. I will say the first time produced some tolerable pain (ouch) but this time wasnt anywhere as bad. I have heard that the hairs will get finer and that appears to have worked with me. I also do my chest and other areas without too much of a problem. As I said the first pass over an area seems to be the worst with succesive usage getting easier. Cant be much worse than the wax.  :D

Yep, first time is bad, but if you already wax, it should be nothing.

That's great, but right now I'm broke (due to unemployment because I was discriminated against after transitioning on the job) and I can't afford to buy any gadgets. So it's sugar for the time being.

Hi  Hypatia, I am sorry to hear that. Is there no possibility of getting any kind of work until you can establish something more in line youre previous line of work?

Sorry to hear that Hypatia, I hope you get back on your feet soon.

Sugaring does leave things feeling nice though.

Hi Hypatia, well I do pray that something will come up for you. It's a damned shame that this kind of thing occurs to many times to our sisters.

I don't want to use real wax because if you make a mess with it, it would be a bitch to clean up. There's nothing easier to remove than sugar. You need nothing more than warm water. It's also the most economical form of hair removal: with less than a dollar's worth of Domino you can cook up more than enough to wax off your whole body. Another point in its favor: it's gentler on the skin than any other method.

The Lebanese chick flick Caramel was in American theaters a couple months ago. It's about several women at a beauty parlor, and includes scenes of leg sugaring. The title refers to the thick gooey sugar preparation they cook up (some of which gets eaten). The original Arabic title is Sukkar Banat (the sugar of girls).

It made my skin feel great, but I tried that before anything else and it just did not have enough strength. It would probably would work fine now for me. It's really not a bad way to go. I would rather use it than wax.
