Title: Getting an 'x' on my passport and other docs
Post by: NickSister on July 01, 2008, 04:00:19 PM
In my country you can apply to have your gender listed as 'x' on your passport. This is usually for transexuals that have been living as the oposite gender but are pre-op/non-op - I think it is a safty kind of thing. Next time I renew my passport I'm going to appy for an x.

Been going through a bit of a battle at my work. Whenever they book travel for me they book me as a Mr even though I specifically say not too. Their argument is the computer systems don't allow me to have nothing or Mx. So my clever compromise was to have Ms instead (I'm slightly more comfortable with Ms than Mr even though my wife is not keen on me being a Ms and would prefer I was nothing or Mx). Anyway, work was not happy about this at all (surprise surprise  ::)). So I've been busy getting in touch with the human rights commision, and other free legal advise places to find out what my legal rights are. Apparantly it is a bit of a grey area. Technically I think I can have any title I want but I'm facing some very strong social conventions. My countries Human rights act suggests that this could be a breach of my human rights.

I'll have to bite the bullet at some point and organise a meeting with HR to see if we can come to some arrangement.

In some ways I feel silly putting up such a fuss because other people just don't get it. They make me feel stupid. But damn it, I want the title I want.

I don't understand why it's such a battle anyway.  If you want a different title, you should be able to have a different title or none at all!

Good luck!!!!

I'm from New Zealand-

Internal Affairs (who issue the passports) sent me this reply:

Good morning Nick

Yes it is possible to have the sex of the holder omitted from a passport - it will show in the passport as an 'X.'

When you apply for the passport you should complete the statutory declaration including the following information:

1. state how long you have lived as a member of the opposite sex
2. state whether or not any gender reassignment surgery has been performed
3. If no surgery has been performed, or full reassignment surgery has not been performed, you should request that your passport is
issued with the sex shown as an 'X"
4. An acknowledgement that if full gender reassignment surgery is subsequently performed, you must have your birth record changed (if you
were born in NZ) before we can issue a passport showing the new sex. The declaration should acknowledge that in this case the full fee
will be payable.

When you complete the application, do not tick M or F in question 8, put an X and note to refer to the stat dec.

Hope this helps,

I agree. I can also use this as identification when applying for other forms such as a drivers license, bank accounts etc...My work also said their policy is to go with whatever is on my passport. Totally perfect.

I so wish we could get an X here in the UK.  Knowing it's possible somewhere else is promising though ^.^

Keep at it with the title change, you're NOT silly for fighting for something that matters to you  :)

That's awesome, I really hope you're able to get your X. I'd like an X, don't think you can get that sort of thing on IDs and passport in the US though.

I wanted to share this with LGBT organizations here in Sweden, so I sent an email to internal affairs. Hopefully they could send me some info on how long this has been a possibility for pre- and non-op.
I think this is incredibly interesting.

And sorry. im not trying to steal your thread.

Hi Nic,

For someone from New Zealand, your English is awfully good.

I stopped filling out stuff that involves M & F.  I'm sure some else fills it in somewhere along the line. Maybe I should just put an X.

   Are you still in Poland?

For someone from New Zealand, your English is awfully good.

The English speaking world does not consist of US citizens who cant speak English.
I'm just saying. -_- If I were a new zealander (is that the correct term for people who live there?) I'd feel insulted by such a comment.

But never mind me, I'm not from a country where English is an official language :)

Me neither -- but keep in mind that the majority of the English-speaking people do not have it as their first language. We are taking over. ;D

Better than American English  ;)
I still can't figure out why you say erbs instead of herbs with an H sound and why you call jam 'jelly'  ??? I do like how you spell Axe 'Ax', though I don't understand why americans have fire ax's. What sort of madman puts out a fire with an ax?

Unfortunately I can't speak Maori, but we use a number of words in everyday conversation.

For a long time, I thought you were Polish. So I was making a joke.  Strange how much commentary it invoked.

I thought 'Axe' was spelled 'axe'.  The fire axe is specially built for chopping through doors so that you can toss it into the fire.

Maybe it is 'ax'. I don't know. I come from imagination land.

Yeah, I could see you were making a joke. People just find you offensive ;)

I must be missinformed about said 'axe'. Well, it should be spelt Ax!

I am polish by heritage, all my grandparents are from poland, but I am NZ born.

I used to say 'herbs' with an 'h' until someone made fun of me.  :P  In the US, jam has seeds and jelly doesn't (I think that's the difference here...???).  But by jelly do you mean jello?  My friend from India used to get frustrated all the time because he speaks British English...especially about biscuits.  :D

Yep,  our jelly is your jello - though you can have fruit jelly which is when you make jam but strain all the pulp out of it - comercially we still call it jam.

Biscuits here are what you call cookies.

A bit off the current discussion, but back to the initial entry, I've never heard of using "Mx" as an alternative to "Mr", "Miss", etc. I like it. I think I'll start using it informally, at least. Does anyone else use this? Maybe I've missed something.

Mx. Lyric

Thank you!, I was going for a Mona Lisa kind of look  ;D

I sometimes use Mx, though people always 'correct it' in their computer systems. I like it too, though prefer not to have any title at all. So far I have found titles in my country are a legal grey area. As far as I can tell it is really just a very strong social convention and nobody wants to admit that it is not that important.

I'd prefer to have no title either thankfully they re not used much, but as a teen I spent too much of my time in hospital and the white board with my name I'd insist on rubbing out the Mr

I say herbs with the h sound though people look at me weird.  And we call Jam either Jam or Jelly.  Thing there is some kind of difference in how their made, but not sure.  I know that I like peanut butter and blackberry 'Jam'  if it's jelly doesn;t have same consistency.

I sent a letter to senator kennedy and his site made me choose a salutation, so I chose 'Dr.' and then after I finished whining about impeaching half the government, I explained that I used Doctor because it's nongendered and I refuse to choose between mr. and ms.

Then I said I lost my virginity and could they check and see if it is in the senator's pants.

OMG.  Wow.

I don't understand why we need titles anymore.  I sort of understand (while I don't really like it) why we used to use them (there are still old ladies who send us Christmas cards and sign it Mrs. Fred Soandso...I'd rather eat dirt...).  But I think it's time they retire.

I hope you know I didn't actually write that last part.  I didn't want them to ignore my plead to bring criminals to justice.

I have had an idea lately of really writing insane letters to important people and posting the exchanges, but it's not fair unless you tell them you're sharing and they won't be honest anyway.
