Title: Any financial aid for transgenders?
Post by: Ayaname on July 18, 2008, 12:36:02 AM
Hey all, I'm new here so I hope I am posting this in the right place. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows of any programs that help poor transgenders afford counseling and hrt. I live in MN and was thinking of trying to get MNCare to cover it but I know someone who is kind of being screwed over by them recently so I'm hoping that I don't have to risk going the same route.

Good luck.  There's not anything that I know of in the good ole US.  It's the free market at work.

Hi Ayaname, welcome to susan's, there is a good source of information her on Susan's if you just go back the the home page https://www.susans.org/ and check out and see if there is any information there is any information there that is beneficial to you. Or you may just stick around, there are many people here that are interested in responding to any questions you may have.

I recently attended a meeting, about trans health issues, held by the MN Trans Health Coalition. (An excellent resource, if you haven't checked it out yet.)  One person there mentioned a program, called Keep Healthy, Keep Working, or something like that.  Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly what it was called, but if you email the MNTHC, they may have it.  I know they took notes at that meeting, but it looks as if they haven't all been posted on the website yet.

Anyway, this program is actually intended for people with severe mental health issues.  Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your point of view) GID qualifies as a "severe mental health issue."  Apparently they can help you with therapy and HRT costs, but not surgery.

Hi  Ayaname, My mate was just telling me that you may want to try a Google search on,

transgender resources New Mexico

This is Cindy's mate, Wing Walker. I began my search for help in exactly the way that Cindy told you (above).  If that doesn't work you might try the same search for a specific city, like Santa Fe or Albuquerque, or maybe for a county.

I have met counselors who either billed on a sliding scale according to a person's income or, if you are covered by health insurance, know how to prepare the billing to the company in a way that they will accept.

Please let us know how that works out for you. If necessary we can try something else.
