If you are transgender and live in the state of California, you should know your rights under different California laws which protect you from discrimination, harrassment, and health insurance exclusion.

I've faced discrimination ... in my professional career. ... I've never wanted to be that person on the news, ... that will never be hired again.

This is an excellent law. I recently was forced to take a stand, though I would rather have not.
I have a job that I (mostly) enjoy, pays well and is in area I wish to live in. I transitioned on the job. There was no stealth for me (had I even desired it) as I am a former public official. The company is a national corporation that supposedly had anti-discimintaion policies in place. I helped to establish company protocol for TS/TG people transitioning on the job. I worked closely with HR in this matter. Unfortunately, my immediate supervisor is one those types who claims to be chrsitian, but excersizes very un-christian attitudes - in short - she is prejuidiced.
Problems began within days of my transition. I won't go into details, but let's just say that the situation rapidly devolved and I was headed (involuntarily) out the door. Despite repeated calls to and assurances from HR, it was evdient that when I came back from GRS, I was about to be fired. Despite the law. I worked with the Transgender Law Center to alleviate the situation. We (TGLC and I) provided documentation detailing discrimination followed by a meeting with some very senior VPs at the company. Corporate knew I had a case and they had a problem. The harrasment stopped dead. I still have the same boss, but she is behaving herself (for now).
Without the benefit of this law and my willingness to utilize the benefits of it, and the hard work of the people at the TGLC, I would be without a job. I'm not saying this is for everyone, but sometimes it's becomes necessary to stand up for your rights.

Tinkerbell,
Thanks for this important information. I personally was not aware of the rights we enjoy here in CA in regards to employment. I know that other places are not like this and it makes me glad I live in CA.
Love always,
Elizabeth

we have good laws , however they become hard to implement when there are several of your coworkers committed

Yes Sheila I know that you mean, and I'm really sorry that most transgendered people in foreign countries have to put up with this BS.

Hi Sheila:
I thought you lived in El Salvador, and this is why I said "countries"....but now that I think about it ..people, especially children should not be the victims of any kind of discrimination regardless of where they live.
I'm glad you live in NY; I have two very good friends there ,...perhaps when I go to visit them next time, we could meet up and have lunch..te gustaria? :)
