Title: First session tomorrow, not sure what to say
Post by: darkreign on August 02, 2008, 07:44:09 PM
So after months of looking around and delaying seeing someone, i finally found someone in my area that deals with Gender Issues (amoung other things) and made a appointment to go see her.
My question is, she has no idea why I am coming in (appointment made to her secatary). How do I bring up the subject? I haven't told anyone that I want to transion before, I'm not even sure whats involved. But I know Im a boy inside the wrong body. How do I tell her this

Well, she does deal with gender issues? Just tell her. I know it feels so weird at first. My biggest discomfort was that I feel people will pity me cause of my condition. But best to just come out with it and get it over with. Walk in, introduce yourself and say right up front that you're there to deal with gender issues. If she's a gender therapist, she's used to that.

Darkreign,

Get right to the point of what you are seeking.  They will generally ask what they can do for you or what you are hoping to get from therapy.  It is the best way to establish a rapport with your therapist.

When I went to my therapist he knew up front why I was there and what I hoped to accomplish.  If they truly know about GID, they will know somewhat is required by the SOC.  From there you two can come up with a plan.

Good luck on your session and enjoy the beginnings of your journey.

Janet

Also another point, don't try to say something like "I think" or "I might." Strong possesive speech like "I am" can be very positive as it shows the person that you have thought this over and you are ready to step forward and begin your journey. Using the more passive tone makes it seem like you are merely putting your foot in the water. This is just how it CAN come across to someone, not how it will.
Good Luck and remember it's important to try and relax.

Be yourself.  Tell the truth.  Let her do her job.

cheers thanks guys

it all went pretty well, once I told her why I was there she took it from there and seemed to know the right things to ask and do, it was pretty good actually. So glad I worked up the guts to finally go see someone

Yay!

It all begins now
