Sometimes it's embarrassing being (half) Swedish. It's a country which I love in so many ways... It's a really beautiful country, the people are extremely accepting, the government actively works for equality... For everyone, but transsexuals.
Think, in this highly liberal country where civil unions between same-sex couples were possible before most other European countries (though marriage is still defined as a union between a man and a woman, unfortunately) but when it comes to trying to get the necessary treatment to survive being transsexual (i.e. hormones, support and GRS), it is so difficult that a lot of Swedish transsexuals end up having to travel to Denmark for treatment!
This is a classic example of what happens when a small coterie of old-fashioned psychologists take control of things. The people don't have a problem with transsexuals, large parts of the political apparatus probably don't either, but these few psychologists and doctors can create policies such as this one in today's day and age...
It's disgusting.
