Title: Trend toward tights is in full swing in Europe, U.S.
Post by: tekla on August 07, 2008, 08:51:42 AM
Retailers in Europe and the United States say that men are buying pantyhose — sheer, satin, glossy, opaque or support — in skyrocketing numbers in recent months.

"We aren't sure if it is the Batman effect or what, but sales to men have been going through the roof," said Kieran Hughes, director of Precious Collections, a British distributor of hosiery products.

At Atlanta-based Luxelegwear.com, a Web site offering European brands to buyers in America and around the world, some 80 percent of sales are now to men.

Oh Dear...

Still others just like the way tights look and feel against the skin.

It's bad enough on the morning train looking at all those men in lycra cycle shorts letting it all hang out! :o

The guys here must be mortified at the thought!....  :eusa_wall:

It will never happen in Mississippi.

I am already a man in tights  :D

Except summer, I wear the tights outdoors for exercise or just strolling, and even at my workplace. Tights are now very popular among women in my country. Female employees here envy me for wearing tights.

No fair, you're not in Europe or the USA.

The photo was taken when I was in the USA about 5 years ago :P

I purchased it at Target. Fashion tights in my country are not my style. When I visited Seattle, I tried to purchase more athletic tights, but could not find any. I guess they usually sell in spring or fall.

Fortunately, quality and price of pantyhose is better in my country than in the USA.

Thanks. REI -- Never heard, but I will stop there in next visit.

There were several Victoria's sectret chain stores in Seattle, and my expectation was high.
Unfortunately, I could not find any interesting item for me, as I do not have large breasts.

I also purchased several athletic short pants in bright color. But the smallest size was usally 'M' and I later found that they are all a little bit larger for me. I guss 'S' sizes were all sold at that time.

For athletic tights, I think 'M' would be better for me, as some of my 'S' size tights split in the crotch area. I guess they are too tight for my crotch area.

Yeah, the Seattle REI store is intense.

The flagship REI store is more amusement park than shopping experience. A three story climbing pinnacle, a path outside to test the latest mountain bike models, and a trip planning section where you can peruse all their travel books without having to feel guilty about not buying anything are only a few of the pleasure to be found here.

For outdoors gear - without the guns - its the best.

For me, this would be great news.  Just out of college (and back in Massachusetts), I did actually wear some hose and tights visibly out and about in otherwise male fashion.  I got looks, only one time did I remember getting called freak or something like that...  I love hose & tights, of course at the moment it's a bit warm to really go with them.  :)

Not sure what reaction I'd get out here now, living so close to San Francisco.  Might have to find out during a run to the store sometime soon, when the fall cooldown occurs...

This is the great joke, of course.  In colonial times, men wore silk 'stockings', and of course wore much more elaborate outfits (well, those of wealth who could afford it, obviously).  Not to mention, powdered wigs...  Heavy facial makeup (the aristocracy would not want to look "tan", like a commoner, so they made themselves up to be very pale to indicate their social status) and the whole nine yards...  Oh, how times have changed, when we now live in the day of "spray tans" because people WANT to look bronzed...

I've just been warned that "this topic has not been posted in for at least 30 days."  If anyone reads this, my question would be: what are the men wearing OVER the tights?  I mean, if they're ones like Barbie is wearing, of course, they'd work on their own.  But other than those running/bicycling things, I haven't noticed any men here in the Northeast wearing tights nor ads promoting them.  Granted, Philadelphia is not NY or San Francisco, but still . . . it's not Mississippi--where it's too hot to wear tights anyway.  I have to wonder if maybe all those men aren't buying them for wives and girlfriends.  So many girls seem to just throw on a pair of jeans for everything, but if you take the time to provide the appropriate accessories, they would seem awfully ungrateful NOT to put on a skirt.  (They should only realize how lucky they are--it's been decades and I still haven't reached the point where I take that delightful swish of a skirt against my legs for granted!)  Anyway, unless these men are wearing the tights and hose under their traditional trousers, or perhaps exposed under regular male shorts as a way of extending their wearability into fall, (Can someone explain to me the rationale for wearing big bulky sweaters on top of shorts and bare legs?  Is it a jock thing or what?), they would need to buy skirts to go with them.  Wouldn't they?
One other note:  Someone mentioned men in colonial times.  At that point, men were already wearing the knee breeches that would develop into full-length trousers in the next century or so.  The height of leg exposure was the Middle Ages/Rennaissance when ALL they often wore were tights, with the infamous cod piece--the Medieval equivalent of the Wonder Bra!  Ah, those were the days!  When men were men, but dressed like women!

Hi, Vickie,

For men, there is an option of Peter Pan tights.

Hi. I'm new to this site. I myself also likes to wear tights and pantyhose occasionally. Normally i will wear them under my pants in office. The feeling not only great, but it also help promote my feminism most of the time.

Tights and leggings are so popular among girls and married women here. Even at freezing temperature, girls wear leggings with miniskirt. I also tried to wear leggings a few days ago. It was so cold, but I could endure it. GG friends at my age commented that they can not wear miniskirts because of their age. Me? I am not sure, but usally wear leggings while biking and running.

The trend now is also in 3 quarter type of leggings. I like those more as it can show my leg out.

I wonder how the FTMs feel about the whole "men in tights" fashion trend.

I do not know about F2Ms as I have never met them. But, some female colleagues praise my wearing tights at my work place whereas other women say like "you should wear proper clothes at workplace" and etc. I am not quite sure how many women dislike my wearing tights, but what I have heard is mostly applause. One of them said I wish to have your legs. Some of women recommended me to wear miniskirt to hide the crotch area, but I have to wear long tees, as I know very well the aftermath of wearing any kind of skirt in my workplace.
