Title: What to do..... with this gift/curse
Post by: findingreason on August 10, 2008, 08:55:07 AM
I have a potentially good male singer/rock voice, and I certainly don't hate it, because I love rock music. Problem is, if I were to transition (seeing a therapist very soon hopefully to figure everything out), I would never be able to use it. I've wanted to be able to train and perform in front of others, but I don't see that happening in this situation. In a sense, it makes me a little sad.

I spent many years getting comfortable with my baritone singing voice, and am unwilling to lose that, so I guess I'm transitioning as a woman w/ a low voice  ;D

This is something that goes beyond issues of gender alone. The question is one that only you can answer, and that is, what will make you happy? If you have TG/TS feelings, they never really go away, rather they get stronger as the years go by. By all means, find an understanding therapist. Perhaps you CAN pursue both directions at the same time. You're the only one who knows.

I have worked closely with some professional vocalists, and its
common for them to get coaching to raise or lower their range.
A good sexy lower pitched female rock voice is a relativly rare
commodity.

I suggest you get some advice from a professional singing coach.

Depending on your singling style and natural range you might be
surprised at what you can achieve with practice ..

As Zythyra suggests, this might not necessarily be an either/or
situation.
