Title: Who are your heroines?
Post by: Stealthgrrl on August 25, 2008, 10:16:55 AM
hey ladies,

I am wondering if some of you are like I was, being drawn to certain well-known women and wanting to be like them? Just as every 12 yr old girl has her heroes, women she looks up to and wants to be like, so did I when I was a baby trans and even before that.

My main one was the actress Helen Slater. She's best known for having been "Supergirl" but imho that's a stinker of a movie. She's also been in "City Slickers", "Ruthless People", "The Legand Of Billie Jean", "Sticky Fingers" and "Lassie."

The thing I saw in her that drew me so much, was her natural sweetness. I saw my best self in her. I also liked the way she spoke. And ok ok, that hair and that face...oo baby!  :P

I managed to acquire an autographed picture of her, with short hair as she had it in "Billie Jean", emulating Joan of Arc, another of my heroines. Anyways, I put it up on my bedroom wall so that I would see it first thing every day, and be reminded of the sort of woman I wanted to be. I didn't want to BE Helen Slater....I wanted to live the qualities in myself that I saw personified in her.

I also loved (and love) St. Joan and Joan Jett, cos they remind me that being female doesn't mean being weak. They reminded me to have the courage to be myself, and to do that despite the opposition of some, and the difficulties and heartaches of doing it.

More recently, my heroine is Emily Dickinson. I'm a poet, so that's a natural affinity. I was able to visit the Dickinson Homestead in Amherst last year and wow. it ended up being a profound experience for me.

I believe that we all need people to show us by example what we are or can be. And in turn, we are that to others. And conversely, even someone we don't like can show us how NOT to be.

So, who were/are your heroines?

My girlfriend is my heroine, and the woman I most admire in the world. If I could be one hundredth of the person she is then I would be blessed beyond compare.

Diane Keaton, Eleanor de Acquitaine, Esclarmonde de Foix, Jean Baker Miller, Judith Jordan, Shirley Chisholm and bel hooks.

And Jodie Foster and Meryl Streep.

And after reading Leiandra I realize I should have gone with my gut and started with Catherine, my partner. *smile*

Without a doubt and by far it was "Mrs. Peel" (Diana Rigg) in The Avengers TV series. She was smart, capable, and drop-dead gorgeous! Portraying a woman as smart and capable in the early 60's was quite radical.

(Except for the hourglass figure, I am happy how close I came to BEING my idol!)

I have one heroine and she is a person. My Grandmother. She is my guardian angel, too. She grew up before the depression and raised a family during the depression. During WWII, she was on the line for building aircraft in Los Angeles. They farmed a little in the town next to LA international airport. When I was born, I had all kinds of problems, medical, she kept me sane and made me feel very normal. She is my heroine.

While there are various celebrities who I greatly admire, my real heroines are all the women in my life. Especially my Mom, who taught me to be a feminist from day one.

my heroines are of course my one true love, my wifey. she does so much for me and our little family. i admire her with an admiration that goes beyond explanation. i take pride in everthing she does as a woman. her life is extremely stressful, and i praise her for still being here by my side. there really are no words to this day to describe how i felt when the two of us first met.

my other heroines, are of course, Xena Warrior Princess, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and Mickie James, but not a one of them comes close to my wifey.

My heroines are those women who came OUT when it was not that popular to do so.  Is it popular now.

Jodie Foster still has not embraced her sexuality.

I admire Melissa Etheridge, ellen degeneres, and those lesbians or trans-women and trans-men who have come out to inspire the rest of us.

I also admire all those famous hetero-women who have come out FOR us.
