Mr. Capouya: I don't want to say that he invented flamboyance. But he
was a tipping person. He was the first to create an ultra-flamboyant,
gender-bending persona -- and to get away with it and make a good
living at it. Liberace and Little Richard followed. Everyone saw him,
and everyone knew he'd acted this way and had become a famous star.
Part of the thesis of the book is that many acts that later followed
can be traced back to him.
