Title: I miss my doggie

We just moved into a new place about a week and a half ago. Over the weekend my dog got loose and ran off but thankfully came back about 30 minutes later. All fine and dandy, and Val's sanity is retained.
So on Monday, my wife thinks "Oh, the dog got loose and came back, so I can just let her out loose." Then, when the dog doesn't come back she doesn't tell me until I get home from work, eight hours later. As in, my dog has been wandering for eight hours and now all of the shelters, the vets, etc are closed so I can't call them. I also can't get any flyers printed out and distributed because it's almost dark.
I take Tuesday off work, print up flyers, pass them out at a ton of mailboxes of places surrounding our house, put them in grocery stores in the two towns near us, at gas stations. I eventually get a call from someone who tells me that he saw her Monday evening near our house, but he didn't know so he didn't stop her. ie, if my wife had told me earlier I could have had a flyer at this guys place, he would have recognized my dog and held onto her for me.
Now it's Wednesday and she's still gone. She means the world to me. For the last year she's been the only comfort I've had, in the dark of night when everything is bleak she's been there for me when it seemed that no one else cared.
I want my doggie back :'(

I hope your dog comes back safe and sound Val. My dog takes off sometimes too and I get sick to my stomach worrying about her and wondering if she's ok.

Truly, you two are not the only ones. But the way she was crying when I got home leads me to think she didn't intend for this to happen. She just doesn't know squat about dogs.
And thanks everyone. It's good to know people care.

Val,
If you haven't already, you might want to look around where you use to live. Sometimes animals will go to where they think home is.
I pray that you dog comes home soon.

I have an electronic fence. A year or so ago it wasn't working right and my lab used to take off all the time. Usually he came back the next morning. One time he was gone for 2 weeks. He suddenly came in the dog door around dinner. His electronic collar was gone and he had a different collar on him. I put a new electronic collar on him but he ran off again. A week later some guy shows up with him. He had him at his house. He confessed that he was keeping him. He said the dog had no collar when he found him. I think he was lying. He felt guilty & returned him. Otherwise, how did he know where to find me? Anyway, I thanked him & said I missed him and my other dog was soooo sad without her friend. I missed him but I don't know about my other dog :) She *was* happy to see him when the guy brought him back.
The moral of the story is, dogs often come back after weeks of being gone.
I was told to call the state police when my dog ran off. They appear to be the clearing house for all lost dogs in Pennsylvania. I was also told to call all the shelters in the area.
When your dog comes back you may want to look into getting a tag inserted in its back. A shelter will scan for it. They also make this nifty GPS locator that goes on the collar. Kind of expensive though.
Hope the puppy comes home soon. I know how you feel.
BTW: Since I fixed the electronic fence my lab has stayed in the yard. .... Oh and I also cut off his balls. That helped calm him down so he wouldn't want to leave. Leave me & I cut off your balls! Bwahahaha.

She's home!!! One of our neighbors about a mile down the road past the cornfields (okay, it's cornfields in all directions) got one of our flyers and recognized her. He called me tonight (while I was getting lasered) and said he had her in his garage. So after the laser I drove straight there and by the time I got there she was in their living room. The neighbors were very cool, loved Ciarda and offered to take her if we ever got rid of her.
She doesn't (currently) have id tags on her. She used to but my stepson had a habit of putting the leash on the tags, not the collar. When we were in town it wasn't as big a deal, because people in town will call the police on a stray dog and Ciarda has the id chip implanted. Country people are more likely to think someone just let their dog roam and not call it in.
But ID tags are high on my priority list for both dogs now. Well, they were before, after last Saturday's short dog escape. But now it's top of the list. As in first thing tomorrow morning.
Thanks for the support everyone!
Val, happy that her doggie will be by her side again.

yay!!! a happy ending!!!
i highly recommend the microchips!
both our girlz have been "chipped"... the problem is not all shelters have the scanners so tags are still a good idea too!!!

Hizmom,
Thanks for breaking my heart. ;) I miss my Bear, he is gone now. But they are pretty babys.

I've been following this thread rather anxiously but haven't posted anything. I'm glad your dog is back. Now I'm gonna go give my big guy (hefty male cat) a hug. (He might not need it, but I sure do.)

Excellent! Glad your dog is back. My dog's first unsupervised walkabout resulted in her getting tags too. She also has an ear tattoo that will identify her.
