Title: Trouble at work
Post by: DeValInDisguise on September 09, 2008, 07:45:12 PM
I've been having a little trouble at work.  My subteam consists of me and three other women, and I'm the new girl, having been at the job for all of 3 1/2 months, and I transitioned at work 6 weeks ago.  Since I transitioned two of the other women have distanced themselves from me.  Normally I wouldn't care, but these two women are my primary source of training for the job.  And they've taken to not telling me stuff unless I ask very specific questions, even if there's no way I could know what questions to ask.

So I go to talk to my manager, trying to keep it low key.  As soon as I tell her that I'm having problems with how some people act towards me, she starts berating me about my performance.  Well, it's kind of hard to perform without training.  But that's my issue to deal with, according to her.  And that my performance is a dissappointment after how "accomodating we were".  After the meeting she sends me a synopsis email that states I feel people are "snubbing" me (quotes hers), and that we will have weekly status meetings on my performance.  That was Wednesday.

Monday we have our first meeting.  It's just as confrontational on her end as our Wednesday meeting, but we get a list of the things I'm going to be working on this week.  Which is the list I went into the meeting, with one addition.  Then she sends me the synopsis email and it reads like a papertrail.  The first email was "You will do task W.  You said X."  The second email is "Val will do task Y.  Val said Z.", even though I was the only shown recipient.

I knew this wasn't a forever job when I took it.  I just wanted to get through transition and surgery, then I could think about switching to a company where I wasn't a guy before.  Didn't think I'd have to start looking again this quickly.

Val,

Is there any kind of policy or program that you can thru to air your concerns?

When I told my boss about one of the guys who was rude to me and that I want to leave my department.  I was moved to a new  department and everything there is going fine.

It sounds like your supervisor isn't on board with your transition.  It sound like documentation for your work performance. Be very careful.

I would not wish to see you lose your job because of transphobia.

I smell a setup. I've seen this sort of ploy happening before. It's a trap. Best thing to do is get out before they spring the trap on you. Find another job ASAP. At least you have the advantage that you can see it coming and prepare. That's better than if it caught you unawares.

Yeah, at home we've already started covering contingencies and I've started contacting my professional network.  Unfortunately it's a tight job market.

And it gets better.  Today I discovered that apparently someone is trying to sabotage me.  The folder for one of my important projects has gone missing from my desk.  Luckily the contents of the folder aren't that important, but unless you were me you wouldn't know that.  Just some notes from meetings.  The important stuff is either online or stuff that I have memorized.  But it's the one project that you would mess with if you knew the priorities of what I'm working on.

Oh well, having been out of work before I typically keep my resume up to date, thankfully.

Glad you are looking around now.  This definitely does NOT pass the smell test.

I wish you the best of luck!

Isn't there an HR department at your workplace? Sounds awful. I hope you get a new, better job soon!
