Kurt Vonnegut begins his Introduction to Mother Night like this: "This is the only story of mine whose moral I know. I don't think it's a marvelous moral; I simply happen to know what it is: We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be."
A recent comment made by a visitor to this blog was to the effect that when people look at a crossdresser, they don't see a woman (whatever the crossdresser would like to believe they're seeing); they see a man in a dress.
